Prevacid/acid
Just wondering others' experiences at their centres regarding prescriptions of prevacid post-op. I went to St Joe's in Toronto for my surgery (VSG), had Dr Sullivan, and was prescribed Prevacid once a day for 3 months. So, I've been about a week without any, and I think? I'm doing okay with regards to acid, etc. I do get some indigestion (ie burping) when I eat certain things and/or if I eat too fast (which sometimes happens when I'm at work). Is this pretty typical? How are others doing with this?
If I were someone who needed to continue on Prevacid, would this be evident at this point yet, or does it develop more gradually?
Thanks!
Kerry
Prior to surg I was diagnosed with Gerd (acid reflux issue). When I finished my 3 months dose if raprozole (a diff type of anti acid med)I knew immediatly i could not do without. The first day off instant heartburn, indegestion and upset stomach.
So my guess would be after a few days if your feeling ok...it would be safe to assume your good.
I'd asked at my 3 months how will I know. They said if your heartburn free no indigestion your good ..
Good luck hope this helps

I never stopped taking Prevasid and I am 15 months out from VSG. My stomach rumbles and I get terrible heart burn once I started adding more variety of food to my diet so I stayed on the Prevasid. Every person is different but many have to stay on Prevasid.
Stomach acid feels like hunger and so if you eat and 30 minutes later your stomach is rumbling that it is hungry that is usually stomach acid and the Prevasid might help.
That's so strange!
I got a 3 month script with 1 refill when I left. And you're sure you only had the 3 months?
That said I knew by 1 month out this was likely going to be a life long script for me. I am intending to phone his office and ask if I should stay with 1 a day, move to 2 a day, etc. if I have any more double up days.
I agree with Paula. I have read on one of the American VGS sites that Prevacid, even taken long term, reduces the acids that ultimately cause hunger. I would really like to hear a physician's theory on this though as this certainly wasn't an evidence based practice site. I am 7 weeks out VSG and my surgeon only gave me a 2 month supply. I still get heartburn and reflux even on one Prevacid daily. When I saw sugeon last week I completely forgot to ask him about the Prevacid. Hope my family physician will order it for me if I continue to need it as surgeon doesn't want to see me again.

I was told by my surgeon that one of the side effects from the VSG is acid reflux. Some may not get it but I was told the most people with a VSG will get it.
I had reflux prior to surgery so doctor was worried the VSG could make it worse which it did I was given Prevaicid in hospital but it didn't work or me and they gave me Nexium but after about a month I couldn't deal with the acid reflux any longer and went back to taking my medication I was on prior to surgery and it worked wonders acid is under control again.
So if the acid continues you will probably need another prescription and yes that means you could be on it long term.
