Boost rather then Opti Question

Hi, I just got back from Toronto after having my Dietian appointment with Mary at TWH. She informed me because I'm allergic to opti I will be doing boost diabetic and beneprotien in place of opti. Has anyone else gone this route? If so how much beneprotein did you use in a shake? I'm just trying to figure cost out.

Thanks,
Heidi

This seems unnecessary. Did you ask her why you couldn't simply follow a low-fat, low-cal, high-protein diet of real food for 2 weeks instead?

The liquid diet is to help reduce the liver size and empty the stomach/bowels of solid matter that may cause infections. While you can get to ketosis on a low-cal/protein diet it's very much harder to do.

Before the surgery I kept putting things off. I was never good enough. One of the benefits of WLS is that you start to believe in yourself. Check out my blog:

At most of the Ontario centres, when you can't do optifast, they get you to do 2 weeks of real food with 48 hours of clear fluids immediately before surgery. There isn't anything magical about optifast that makes it easier to get into ketosis with it than with real food that has the same number of calories and carbs.

ETA: Now I'm thinking this varies not just from centre to centre, but from nut to nut. Katie at TWH was fine with me doing real food if I can't tolerate the opti.

The one thing I learnt about this whole process: there's absolutely no consensus on the do's and dont's

Country to country, center to center, doctor to doctor, patient to patient.

Pop? No pop?
Caffeine? No Caffeine?
VitB12 sublingual vs VitB12 tablet.

Interesting though what you said about Optifast. Hadn't heard that.

I'd have found that really tough without Optifast. Optifast was a sudden break of my old routine of food, food, food. For me I could concentrate on one single thing: the next dreaded drink.

You're right, there doesn't seem to be consensus on much of anything. This is part of why I prefer to use the ASMBS guidelines for myself.

It's because that is my diet already but because of female health problems, which the WLS is to help 95%, I can't lose weight. There is nothing to change in my diet for pre surgery except to put my on the Boost

(these are my numbers.... you should double check with the nut).

The Optifast shake I believe provides 20g of protein. Book Diabetic provides 16g of protein.

Thus you'll need an extra 4g of protein or 2/3rds scoop of beneprotein).

With 14 days and 5 meals a day that's 47 scoops or 1.5 cans of beneprotein.

I keep a spare can around: it's great for mixing into my oatmeal to get me a protein boost in the morning.

But you may need 3 tins:

(Also double check with your nut the exact portions. I know to get ketosis you have to limit yourself to a very small amount of calories. With Optifast it's limiting to 800 calories a day, but 5 boosts a day is 950cals. Thus you may only be allowed 4 boosts a day in which case you may need to add more protein to those 4. I.e. Optifast provides 100 protein a day, boost at 4 a day provides 64g in which case you'll need an additional 36g a day...or 6 scoops of beneprotein. 6x14 = 84 scooops...which means you'll need 3 tins of beneprotein.)

Confused? Yep I am too. So the answer is between 1 and 3 tins. :-)

Hey Heidi - one more appointment down! :o)

Here are the stats from the Optifast box. these stats are for One shake and we are supposed to have four shakes per day for a total of 900 cals.

one shake has:

225 cals
22.5 g protein
7.5 g fat
16.8 g carbs

So the daily totals work out to:

900 cals
90 g protein
30 g fat
67.2 g carb

hope that helps!  I don't the stats for beneprotein.
