Flying After RNY

 Hi,
Does anyone know how long you have to wait to fly after you have a RNY?  My hubby and I are planning to fly to Toronto when it's time for my surgery and I'm not sure how son after I would be able to fly. We're planning on staying in the Toronto area for 3 to 5 days after I get out of the hospital.

Thank you,
Heidi

I assume you're talking about flying home?

I'll be flying to Hamilton from Thunder Bay for my surgery. The surgeons prefers we spend about a week in Hamilton in case there are any surgical complications. I'll be flying home between 5-7 days post op. The flight is about 2 hours. The team much prefers that we fly as opposed to drive. I assume the drive between the Soo and Toronto would be between 6 and 7 hours... That's really too long so soon after surgery. Sitting for such long periods of time would put you at higher risk for blood clots and I can't imagine it being a very comfortable ride.

We got travel information from our centres at our pre-surgical meeting. Have you had yours yet?

Just  FYI, you can get a second seat for yourself for comfort reasons with any of the airlines at no extra charge. There's a form you can find on their websites that must be filled in by your physician . I did it in the summer and it was a great help not being squished. If I'm not mistaken, you might be able to get a discounted (or free) rate on a companion fare if your physician signs the portion of the form that indicates you need someone to accompany you for medical reasons. I flew with Porter but I believe Air Canada and Westjet also have these available.

Thank you for the information. I agree with the flying the 9 to 10 hour drive would be too hard. I will check out the forms for the companion part.
We will be using a week of our time shares and getting a condo in Toronto so it will be more comfortable then a hotel.
I fly Porter as well. I much prefer the service and comfort of their planes.

I'm going on to my 3rd appointment. I had orientation, telehealth with NP, on Jan 9th Nutrional Class at TWh and April 10th SW telehealth. I will ask about travel information when I go on the 9th.
Again thank you for the information.

Happy New Year

Heidi, do you find the seats bigger than Air Canada on Porter?  I have a friend that is going to be flying Porter in the New Year when they start up here in Timmins but she said she couldn't find any info about seat size to compare.

I found I could fit in the seats and not use an extender at my largest (278 lbs) but found my hips overlapped into the other seat a little bit making it a bit uncomfortable i'm sure for the person sitting beside me.

 Hi Tracey,
I'm pretty sure they are bigger. The plane itself is much roomier all the way around. She will love flying Porter they are all so friendly and accomidating.

Thanks Heidi, she did see that but she's very close to the seats on Jazz Air being just a bit snug so I'm sure if Porter is slightly larger then she should be fine.  I know that Air Canada posts the actual size of the seats but didn't see anything like that on Porter.

I have a band but I was allowed to fly home the night after surgery.  I'd only stick around Toronto as long as you had to then head home.  Doesn't matter how comfortable the hotel is, there is no place like home when recovering.
