Lesson Learned

It's almost impossible for a RNYer to get too much iron, as RNYers can't process iron in the duodenum and only absorb a little in the stomach pouch. The minimum dose for toxicity is 1100mg, a dn with 100mg set as a daily goal, over 70% of typical RNYers don't even ge close to that amount. Unless you have have haemochromatosis, where your body hangs on to too much iron, it isn't a concern. RNYers, and especially women of childbearing age, should be supplementing iron to reach 100mg/day of elemental iron total through food and supplements.

It's easy when you are getting it done religiously but most of us after many years out, don't get it checked out every 3 months like we did when we were first out....so getting it done 1 x a year or 2 x a year, it is longer between times and thus, much easier to have levels go in the toilet!

Iron has been my issue since 3 months out when I was first iron deficient. I'm not playing with this anymore - knowing how crappy I feel :(   I'm taking it proactively regardless now.

I have just re-read all the comments....and I would just like to say PLEASE....do not take any supplements without first discussing with your family physician or Bariatric clinic......

Sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing......

Very true.

I am taking them because my bloodwork has told me time again and again to take them and my primary physician is telling me to take them. She is my after care.

I'm not one to tell you to go against your surgeon's team...but honestly I wish I would have so I could have avoided a deficiency at 3 months out.  :(

But here's the thing too ----- I wish I would have taken them early (my friends who all went to Henry Ford were told to take them) but my facility did not tell me to take them.  I could have avoided a whole deficiency thing very early out had I supplemented proactively.

It would be nice if all the Ontario centres followed the same regimine!

Hi Dawn....my comments were not directed at you....and I wholeheartedly agree that is is much easier to avoid a deficency then to try and recover from one...

I would just hate to see someone read this thread - and based on some opinions that are delivered as absolutes....start to supplement....on iron or on any other vitamin .....

I sure am for thinking for yourself....and being your own advocate.....and in this frame of mind I would ensure I got my blood work done at least every 6 months if I was past 1 year post wls....during the first year there are plenty of checks thru the ontario programs....

Again.....I hear you what you are saying....and how important it is to stay vigilant ....forever.....I thought your post was timely and important

I am - and will always be - against posters who give advice in an absolute manner without having the medical ( or other) degree to back up the advice....

regards

Barb
