I was also constipated postop and it is nasty. Milk of Magnesia worked for me. And to try to avoid it I take 2 stool softeners every night before bed and put benefibre in my water. Once you are constipated though the stool softeners won't work. You need the MOM. Take the full dose before bed and you should have success in the morning. Drinks lots of water as well. Best of luck.

Do not wait to do something especially with the symptoms you are having. A bowel obstruction can be life threatening! I would go immediately to the nearest 24 hour drug store and buy an enema or suppositories or both. I'm not sure anything oral at this point would have an effect. Try the suppository first and if no luck do the enema.

How many days has it been?
Anything over 5 can be a major problem - go to your doctor.
In the meantime, Colace as a softener works.
Don't over-fibre yourself ... I did that and ended up with stools the size of a small thermos bottle.
Ouch.

Colace comes in liquid form for children - double or triple the dose for the first couple of times anyway.

As Jenn said, a bowel obstruction is major - I had surgery for that as a child, as it had been left too long.
If you're no better by tomorrow, go see your doctor.

I experienced that last weekend. It was horrible! I took Milk of Magnesia & it worked overnight. Ever since then I've taken a Probiotic daily & upped my fiber intake a bit and things are moving along nicely.

Sorry you aren't feeling well.  Bowel issues suck and I've been dealing with constipation on and off since my surgery too.  Audrey recommended trying glycerin suppositories when I was having problems.  Not fun, but effective and I felt much better when it was all done!

Best of luck!

I had BM issues in the summer. I actually went to the ER because I thought I had an obstruction or something else going on. I didn't realize that I was really constipated because I was going everyday. The ER did a CT scan and told me I was "full". The Dr told me to use an enema, I was sooo full, it did not work for me. I ended up taking "citra-mag" Within 3hrs it started to work and I was in the washroom for 4hrs! BUT I felt great after.

I eat a fibre1 or fibre plus bar everyday and I also just found these little bars at costco "Praeventia" they have 5gfibre in them and are quite tasty (remember, you can eat these things when you are further out)

I am NOT, by any means saying to use "citra-mag" since you are only 4weeks out. I am merely telling you what happened to me so you can prevent your constipation getting that bad.

Call your centre and just verify what they want you to do.
