I'm curious does everyone have to do optifast before WLS?

Thanks Heidi

In Ontario, yes, it is just a part of the program. If you pay to go out of province or happen to be a special case referred out of province, then it (or something similar) is often required but not always. Dr. Gagner in Montreal, for example, does not require any pre-surgical diet, I think just fluids the evening before and nothing after midnight, the same as any other surgery where you're being put under general.

Thank you for the response. I will be having my surgery at TWH. I actually look forward to it because it means I will be close to "D" day.

Have a great evening
Heidi

Hey Heidi,

Yes, everyone has to go through it.  Your surgeon will let you know for how long you have to take it, depending on your weight. I'm on day 5 of 4 weeks (I was over 400).

Optifast's main job is to "melt" the fat around your liver because the surgeon has to lift it to go being and make your new pouch!

Hope it helps!
Best of luck in your journey!
Nathalie

Hi Nathalie,
Thank you for the information. I'm just starting out, I have my orientation Sept 6th at TWH.  MY Ob/GYN that referred me for surgery is hoping I get Dr. Starr same as you. She went to med school with him and he comes highly recommended.
I weigh 243 lbs right now, I dropped from 265 lbs but it took me 3 years because of health issues like most on here.
It makes sense to be on optifast to shrink the liver. Not only that to lose weigh for goinjg under.

All the best on your Journe as well

Heidi
