Heprin/Humber River

Had my surgery 3 years ago - Dr Huynh did mine - he was fantastic - not only did he do the gastric bypass, he also removed my gall bladder and repaired a small hernia.  Yes, the heparin shots are necessary, to reduce the chance of blood clots.  They are covered by OHIP the same as the surgery.  My total bill for my stay amounted to the cost of having a phone in the room and that was it.  OHIP covered everything else.

I have 2 work colleagues and 2 other acquaintances that have had this surgery, One was about a year ago and the other 3 just a few months ago.  All are doing well despite the odd little set back.  The way I figure it - these little set backs/problems can be dealt with and no matter how upsetting they can be at least I am alive to be annoyed.  If I didn't have the surgery and was still carrying that weight - well I would probably be dead or close to dead (no exaggeration).

Just do what they tell you and in my opinion - don't try to rush things when it comes to getting back to normal eating.  Make sure you are ready and comfortable with it - after all, now you have a long lifetime ahead of you when you can eat in the new "normal" sense.

Good Luck  and God Bless

I had my surgery at St. Joe's (Toronto) through the HRRH clinic.   I asked before my surgery and was told I'd be given the blood thinners for the 3 days I was in hospital and that was it.   Apparently the "necessity" of them beyond your hospital stay is arbitrary as per each doctor/hospital.

I had my surgery at Humber and only needed the Heparin while in hospital.

Depends on each individuals whether or not you need to continue after your surgery.

Therefore wait till after surgery to find out if you need them or not.

Good Luck and take care
