Topic: Dr Keith..Dr. Gornichec....I am looking for imput from those that have gone to either Dr.
I am wanting to know ya'lls opinions on these Dr's. If you have gone to either one of them I would love to hear your experiences and what you disliked and liked about them. Would you go back to that Dr?  Thx Debbie A for your imput!

I started out with the Edmond group.

Went thru all the steps; seminar, counseling and psychological testing, exercise physiologist, initial exam, group support meetings...was ready to schedule my surgery.

Then unexpected family issues forced me to delay my surgery...for a year.  When I was able to get back with the program my family doctor recommended Dr. Keith.   ( see my reply to your other post..)

At the time that I started with the Edmond group they required you to loose a certain percentage of your weight prior to your surgery.   This is designed to shrink your liver and make the surgery easier to perform....easier for the doctor and safer for you.

Dr. Keith does not have this weight loss requirement.   But the pre-surgery diet that he has you follow achieves the same result.... for me personally this was a far less stressful way to go.

Dr. Keith is totally NO nonsense.  He is definitely gonna tell you like it is....and you may not want to hear what he has to say.  He nicely chewed my butt at my one month followup.  But I wasn't doing what I was supposed to do and NEEDED to have my butt chewed.

I also liked the fact that I would have the surgery in a hospital (Norman Regional)...so if anything went wrong I didn't have to be transferred.

I believe both the Edmond team and Dr. Keith are very competent surgeons....Dr. Keith was my ultimate choice and one I'm still very happy with.

I have federal BCBS and used Dr. Ronnie Keith (Norman), who is a preferred provider for BCBS. 405-360-7100 or www.owlo.com   Norman Regional Hospital also has the designation as "A Center of Excellance" for bariatric surgery.

Dr. Gornichec ****) is also on BCBS.  I understand that he is also very good.

I used Dr. Keith because my primary care doctor highly recommended him....Dr. Keith did RNY for one of his family members.   Dr. Keith is no nonsense, he is gonna tell you like it is.  This is a tool and for it to work YOU must be willing to do the work...follow the diet, get in your protein, water and vitamins.   He is also all about you and the surgery.  Overall an excellent doctor.

For pre-approval you start by attending one of their seminars, they contact your insurance and get the approval for you.  When you are filling out the medical history, be sure to list all previous weight loss attempts; i.e. Weigh****chers, diet pills/products (Redux, Phen Phen, Alli, HGC etc) Medi-Fast  or other medically supervised diet.  BCBS usually requires a 6-month to a year of medically supervised weight loss attempts.

Because I was able to document YEARS of failed weight loss attempts BCBS approved me quickly and my surgery was scheduled quickly.

Good luck on your journey.

Everything happens for a reason.

It's not too late, I promise.  The hard truth and very tough pill to swallow is that I know in my heart that if my husband and I had taken control of our weight issues and lived a healthy lifestyle when my son was young, he probably would not have had the weight issues that he's got now.  That being said, we also have a daughter, and thank God she does not have serious issues with her weight.  Maybe she looked at us and knew she didn't want to be like us.  She's never communicated that to us, but luckily whatever she's done has worked!  I live with a lot of guilt every day and wish I had been smarter, but at least it's not too late and he's going to get the surgery he needs to turn his life around and live the rest of his life to the fullest!  I'm certain that your little boy will adopt your healthy llifestyle.  I know that children learn through example.  Congrats to you and your husband!

My son is 10 years old and already obese.  I hate, hate, hate that my issues have now been passed on to him.  My husband had WLS 10 weeks ago and has lost 70 lbs.  We are hoping that its not too late to influence him into a better life style.  Somehow deep inside I wonder if one day I will be in the place you are right now.   I know how excited you must be to see him getting the help he needs.  Congratulations!!!
