Does anybody know if oklahoma medicaid pays for the stomach surgery? I'm at about BMI: 61.6 and I have a 7 yr old boy and I'm a full time college student. I told my doc that I'm dieing slowly as it is. I'm willing to take this chance of haveing more time with my child by haveing the surgery. She wont give it to me... Is there any docs that except medicaid in oklahoma if anybody knows let me know Thanks again Tammy

Actually, I don't know. Medicare will pay for the surgery. Call the Oklahoma Health Care Authority and ask if weight loss surgery is a covered benefit. If it is, find a new doctor! Best Wishes

If you go to the menu on the left and click on Insurers and then click on the M and scan down. There are several people that have had it done with Medicade. I would email them and find their doctor and call. Good Luck, I am waiting on Medicare but my doctor is in Texas.

Deloris, My medicare started on April 1st of 2003. I went in to see my doctor first visit on April 5th and when I walked out of his office, my surgery date was set. I had no trouble at all getting medicare to pay for my surgery! That was 2 years ago now and I'm healthier and happier today! *S* I do hope this helps and gives you some encouragement! I have United Health Care but there are people in my support group that had Medicaid. Dr Gorospe in Tulsa is my Dr. I don't know if he still takes it or not but he is a great Dr. his office number is 918-252-2800. If he doesn't do it anymore his office might be able to give you some direction. (it seems I heard something about Dr's having a hard time actually getting the money from Medicaid after the surgery but I'm not sure) Good Luck and don't give up!!! Janice 258/209/150 goal

Tammy, The last I heard from Oklahoma Health Care Authority is that they are not paying for this at this time. But it has been a few months since I specifically asked. I used to work filing insurance for a hospital. The last woman I spoke with there, stated they might be covering it in the future if medically necessary so the best thing to do is to call them directly. Wish I could help more! Genie

Tammy, I have just went through a battle with Ok medicaid (OHCA) for a year and a half. I went all the way to the top. I talked to the Director of Medicaid in Oklahoma and all to no avail. They will not pay unless you are a minor and then it is iffy. I am sorry to give you bad news. However, do not stop fighting them. They have to give in at some point. It is so not right for them to refuse life saving treatment to the citizens of Oklahoma when all over the country other states are paying. I will keep praying for all who are fighting this battle. I gave up and paid for it myself. But I do know there is an urgent need for this in OK. Good luck. Toodles, Reneé

I am truly tired of the OHCA giving out conflicting stories all the time. I was supposed to have the surgery and then they switched everyone over to soonercare choice and I was told that I would still be able to have the surgery. Did it happen, no. I then started the process again in 2004 and I was told by the director's secretary that the surgery was approved on a case by case basis and each patient had to meet certain medical criteria, (which I did) and then you had to find a doctor who would work with you, (which I found) and your PCP would have to refer you for the surgery (which he did). They (OHCA) went right up to scheduling the surgery and then they refused to approve the hospital stay. It was like they were saying, you can have the surgery, but where you will stay once it is over is not our problem. I am still fighting this fight and believe me it is tiring. Just keep pushing and who knows what may come of it. As for me, I am still fighting because I do not have a home to mortgage, nor do I have a husband nor a job with good insurance. I wish you well in this endeavor. shirley

I am just beginning this battle with SoonerCare. My PCP said that I was a good candidate but then he moved. Now I have to meet the new Dr. and see what he has to say. I am trying to stay positive with everything but reading all of this stuff about insurance, I am not sure I will ever get the surgery done and I haven't even started yet! Good luck to you in all of this! Melissa
