Curiosity Killed the Cat . . .
Have any of you been able to lose a significant amount of weight without surgery? I am very overweight (5'10", about 290 lbs) and it needs to go away but I don't want to have surgery. I used to be very active with my boys and my horses, but I'm so big now that I have to get on the back of the pickup to get on my horse and hate to get off because I'm afraid my knees will give and I'll hit the ground! To think that I used to be able to grab my horses mane and swing up bareback and now I have to use the pickup makes me absolutely crazy. I'm tired of being fat but don't know how to start getting rid of it. Suggestions?
i can only speak for myself.. I was the queen of yo-yo dieters. I would loos 20/30 pounds and end up gaining more back. Personally, I think the first thing you should do is to talk to your PCP about dr guided weight loss options. WLS is definately not the answer for everyone. However, when your weight is effecting your everyday way of life, you should go see your dr with an open mind. Good luck to ya

Teresa,
First of all being scared of WLS is a healthy place to start. This is a serious surgery that should not be taken lightly. Once you get to the place where the position you are in is more unbearable than the risk of WLS and you are committed to a permanent lifestyle change, Then you are ready to make a decision as to which surgical option is right for you. Most insurance companies do require that you have tried a physician supervised diet prior to approving WLS, so that is a good place to start. Statistics show that diets have a 99.9% failure rate, so most people gain back all or more than they loose in a one year period after stopping the diet and you can't diet forever. Dieting is such a negative on your Phyche. You are always telling yourself "No, I can't". With WLS you finally get to tell yourself, "Yes, I can in moderation." And the great thing is that a little bit is so much more satisfying after WLS. This is not a Cinderella pill, it is a big, lifetime commitment to change, but it is so worth it.
