I currently have a primary doctor that is fantastic, but is unwilling to help me obtain gastric bypass surgery. What I'm looking for is a good doctor that is willing to help me w/this. Could someone please suggest one to me?

Hi Darin: I am 2 weeks/3 days postop. I used Dr. Gorospe @ Southcrest and had Lap RNY. I absolutely loved both he and Dr. Kirk who assists with the surgery. I am having no problems whatsoever and feel great. Have lost 23 pounds and can already say I would do it again. And I definitely would use Dr. Gorospe again. If your primary doctor will refer you that is all you need. Good Luck.

Hi Darin, You said your primary doc is fantastic so I am wondering what his reasoning is regarding not helping you get the surgery. My primary doc was against it too three years ago but when another doc in the hosp started doing the surgery he started to see the success patients were having and changed his mind. I think some doctors don't understand the advances in WLS over the last few years. WLS now is so much different that the old stomach stapling or other forms of bypass which caused so many complications and the mortality rates were high. I would talk to him again and show what research you have done. I would bring print outs with cold hard facts to show him if you can. If all else fails seek another primary care doc as the last resort. Another thing to consider is that not everyone should have WLS and maybe your doc has valid reasons for not recommending it for you. Good Luck. Michelle OKC

As one of the other posters stated, you may need to educate your doctor. Also, depending on your insurance, you may need that Doctor to refer you, etc, based on previous experience. Dr. Dianne O'Connor in OKC was my pcp when I had surgery. She was very supportive becasue of my past attempts, failures, drug reactions etc. Hopefully others (more in the Tulsa Area) woudl be able to help with some PCP referrals... Best of luck!!! Becky

My pcp is in Pryor, Dr. Paul Battles, D.O. He is really supportive of wls. I was hesitant to bring it up to him, put it off for over a year, but when I did he was all for it. He is amazed at the results we get from wls. I was told by one of his nurses that he 25 wls patients. Good luck.

Darin, Dr. Matt Johnston in Claremore is my PCP. He has several people in his office who have had WLS. He referred me without a problem. My surgeon is Dr. Keith in OKC. Hope this helps. M Pearce

Dr. Drooby at Mercy is fabulous and supportive of WLS. I know his letter made a huge differnce in my insurance deciding to grant the surgery.
