I am 3 1/2 weeks Post-op and have been given permission to have cream soups, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and yogurt. The only thing I can tolerate now is my protein shakes and cream soups. I tried 2 small bites of scrambled eggs last week and it felt like it got stuck. I was in pain for 3 hours. I called my doctor's office and they told me that some cannot tolerate eggs. So, I have not tried again. I have tried oatmeal now and it does not want to go down and the same problem happened with yogurt yesterday. After 2-3 bites I get a funny feeling in my chest. In addition I have pains that are in my center chest and in back. It has only started resently. I have been able to eat yogurt previously, so I am unsure what is going on. This is getting old. Anyone have any suggestions or had back pains that started after surgery?

I'm 9 mo out and just the other day, I had the same problem. I had for breakfast some scrambled eggs and a small piece of ham. I tho't I had eaten too fast, so I waited for it to settle. It never did. I got frothy and started to panic when my chest started to hurt. I threw up twice and felt a little better. I called my surgeon and he suggested I drink hot tea with lemon. There is something with the bitterness of tea and lemony acid that helps to break down whatever causing your food to be stuck. Afterwards, my pouch began to relax and I felt like a brand new woman. I did the liquids/soft diet the next day, and today I'm back to normal. My surgeon told me if it didn't clear up after drinking the tea that I would need to report to the ER and he'd have to scope me and dig the food out. Yuck! So, try the hot tea, if that fails...umm call your surgeon. Much luck to you. Laverna Lap RNY 3/22/04 -138lbs

Thanks for the advice. I feel lost lots of times. I did try tea and it helped a little bit. The doctor was not concerned because I had not eaten very much. I sure like the tea solution better. I am afraid to throw up though. Thanks again Linda

Linda, When you do oatmeal make sure it's real thin to begin with, almost a gruel like consistency...soupy. Eating it thick will cause the trouble your having. Eggs....I still don't do eggs well. It's almost like my pouch knows their coming and puts up a roadblock. Yogurt - I did real well with Wal*Mart's Great Value "Light" Yogurts. They're just a bit thinner than some of the "Name" brands. Even now, 10 months out, I still prefer them. Those first few weeks hot tea saved my bacon. In other words it would get my pouch to relax and stop foaming me. There for a while no matter what I put in my mouth I'd get the dry heaves and later the dreaded foam!!! Finally I started drinking a bit of hot tea JUST BEFORE and JUST AFTER I ate...I know that violates the no drinking rule...but individual survival forces you to do somethings sometimes. Anyway....it worked... Also are you eating with a baby spoon??? That's what you should be using and it helps prevent you from taking too big of bites for your pouch to handle at one time. Hope this helps!! We're here if you need us. Happy thoughts, Va 5' 3.5" 232/133/13? -99 pounds -89 inches
