Sugar vs. Carbs? (post op)

I have been very careful to not eat sugary foods. I check labels and try to eat protein first. BUT, some foods have no sugar but are still high in carbs. Do I need to eliminate them from my diet as well? I was thinking that since my portions are so small that I can still eat some carbs, as long as they have no sugars. What do you do?

I wouldn't be the one the to answer this question, I would say just follow what your doctor tells you. I think the Carb question is kind of like the old Miller Lite argument, "Great Taste, Less Filling". If you asked 20 random people you would probably get 20 different answers. I personally think there needs to be balance in diet. Right now I am just moving into soft and pureed foods. I tend to be eating mostly sugar free carbs, but I try to balance them out as best as I can with protein supplements.

Hi Leslie. In my opinion, as early out as you are, you will probably eat more carbs now than when you are further out. I would say go for the good carbs ie.....grains, whole wheat etc. You do need to have some carbs in your diet. I know Dr. Floyd would say eat what you want. Just be aware of what you are eating and make sure you are getting good amounts of protein. Did I answer your question? Leanne

Thanks! Well, I kept thinking that if I can't eat carbs, then I am EXTREMELY limited on what I can eat. I still can't eat red meat. . .or lettuce. . And I'm pretty much sick of bacon and eggs. I can't wait until I can eat a good salad.

My surgeon want us to eat a balanced diet, Meaning something from each food group. He also says protein first, so that is what I do. I might have kashi go lean and carb countdown milk for breakffast, salad with grilled chicken fooor lunch, carbwell bar for snack, and chicken, veggies and potatoe for dinner. I also supplement with protein shakes when needed, usually one a day just to make sure I get my protein in. I don't worry to much about the carbs. because it is really hard to get to many at this point. The sugar isn't an issue either since I don't eat sweets anymore and am carefull of what I eat anyway. Good luck.

Hi leslie! I agree with what leanne said; we do need SOME carbs in our diet. I try to keep mine at a minimum though, definitely. Plus, my pouch doesnt tolerate much in the carb department anyways!!! I just recently was able to eat a salad though, and it has THRILLED me to be able to have salad again! all that protein does get old after a while whether we chose this or not!! and boy, my gag reflexes were going overtime on cheese and such i was getting SO sick of them! lol. If you really do need help in the protein area, have you tried Isopure no carb ready made protein drinks?? they are about the only ones i can tolerate and have quite a few flavours. Good luck!!!!
