How long does this last?
Okay, I'm really doing well. I was up and walking about 3 hours after getting to my room. My back was just sore! It was just like when I have been induced with my children. You have to be monitored so for however long you are there-you are on your back.
I was very restless in the hospital. By the morning following surgery, I had such a headache I couldn't think straight. I asked my husband if Leticia (the nurse) was less personable than the rest or was it probably because I wasn't very nice because of my headache. He told me she had a different personality than the others, but that I was also giving the "silent" treatment. I apologized and asked for something different for pain. They gave me something later and my headache cleared quickly. Thank God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway almost didn't stomach the upper GI stuff because my headache made me so nauseous. BUT HERE IS THE REAL QUESTION: How long before the BMs start being normal? I know this is a sensitive issue, but since you all have been through it before, I was hoping I could get an answer.
Also, I haven't eaten a big variety yet, but nothing seems to bother yet. I have had arginaid, EAS Advantage shakes (high protein, lowcarb), chicken broth, Crystal Lite Kiwi Strawberry (very good), and a few eggs and now as of today, 2 crackers, and some cream of chicken soup. Oh, and LOTS and LOTS of water. Is this normal for you all. I also had a tiny bit of my daughters tuna fish salad. Just the eggs, tuna and mayo part. It tasted so good, but I only had a tiny bite. It also seemed to be okay to my stomach.
Anyway, if anyone can help my on the BM question, I'd appreciate it. Also, is this going to be like childbirth, we are kind've scared to really push or strain right afterward when it really is okay?
Please let me know,
Teresa
The bm situation varies from person to person. Some do not go for days, while others are back to their normal selves in a matter of days. I think you will find once you are able to increas the amount of food you are taking in your bowls will produce more. I am pretty much back to how I was before surgery. I did have bouts of the runs for the first two weeks after surgery, but once I was able to eat a little "solid" food things tightened up. If you find that you are straining too much, you may need a stoole softener. Good luck.
I was very glad I only had lecretia for one nite. It wasn't just you. I will update my hospital rating as soon as I can sit at the computer for a bit longer. My stay wasn't as "joyous" as it could have been. I had to have my IV replaced 5 times in the few days I was there and I only got them replaced after repeatedly telling the nursing staff that there was a serious problem with them. Ya - 2 nurses at the IV pump reading "obstruction", knot as big as my fist in my forearm from teh fluid that won't go into the vein and they can't find the obstruction. At this point I finally had them turn the light on and LOOK at my arm - this happened 4 more times I had to tell them that my IV needed replacing. You should see the bruising I have now. I also think all of the IV fluid going into my arms may ahve something to do with my i'm still retaining so much excess fluids .. just my opinion. I was so grateful that Dr. Floyd said Sat nite if it clogged up again for them to just leave it out. So at 5 am Sun morning my iv was removed.
He released me on the pureed diet - stage 3 by their book. I haven't had much trouble with anything i've tried so far. I'm getting fluids w/o any problems but having to remember to eat something. This will be a personal battle for me because I only ate one meal a day prior to surgery, but well worth the effort.
24 hours after the BM monster hit and I"m back to just passing a bit of gas (still hurts a bit) for the most part. I think i'll battle gas for a while cause I just can't seem to get a grip on swallowing anything w/o taking in excess air.
Hey Crysti. sounds like you are doing great. As far as the bms go, I had very loose stools for quite a while. That was ok for me and not having to strain made it even better. Also, I know for me when I started getting more real food in I felt better. Take it slow and if it works for you, I would think it would be ok but don't pu**** Take care and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
