I was just told that Pacificare HMO is NOT going to be offered in 2005 as an insurance option. This information was sent out in an OPEA email. I'm not sure that this is finalized or not, but if you are a state employee and have Pacificare, you better get your surgery before the end of 2004. It also says that they are trying to get one or two other HMO's to offer their plans, but there is no guarantee. HealthChoice is the "other" state insurance and it DOES NOT cover WLS. I'm not sure if there is anything we can do as state employees to try to keep Pacificare, but wanted everyone out there to have a heads up.

Add Community Care to your list! I was told at a support meeting in June that CC PPO will no longer pay for WLS when your calendar term rolls around. They will honor all patients that have been approved. Everyone else is on their own. What a crock! Are they willing to pay thousands and thousands of dollars when you go into the hospital with a heart attack or other weight related problem? Someone needs to get with the program!

I agree. I think our whole insurance philosophy is screwy. We spend all our time and effort on intervention, once the crisi****s (such as heart attack, diabetes, and such). When we would save time, money, and lives by focusing on PREVENTION!
