Just got approved!

I haven't posted here before. I've been trying to get approval for the past year, and finally, today, the Dr's office called and told me that I was approved for the RNY procedure. I'm quite breathless at this point, and a little scared. I had just gotten a rejection letter a week ago, and had resigned myself to the fact that the insurance company was going to be a stinker on this one (they have rejected other claims from others I work with who are trying to get this surgery), and now, I get a call saying I am approved. So there is a lot going through my head right now. Can anyone who's had the RNY tell me how long it takes before you can resume normal activities? By normal, I mean the ability to drive, return to work, etc. I need to plan so that I can set a surgery date. I'm also a lil scared about having the surgery. I don't think you really get scared at all until you get that approval and you know you can do it. I am going to be a first time grandma, and I want to be around for a good long time to enjoy the little one(s). But, I think my "fear" is just all the stuff I'm feeling right now, knowing that I am approved. Am I making sense, or do I sound as jangled as I feel right now? =) Anyone who wants to write me off list can do so at [email protected].

Hi Candy! Congratulations on your approval! Different docs have different guidelines for stepping out after recovery - your questions will be best answered by your surgeon. I drove after about 2 weeks, and took advantage of my leave not returning to work for five. I know others have returned to the office after a couple of weeks, especially those who had lap surgery. Have you attended any support groups? Who is your surgeon? I'm excited for you, good luck!

I haven't attended any support groups yet, but I have been researching this and talking to other post ops for the past year. I am thinking about Dr Floyd, and contacted his office for a consultation. I was going to use a Dr out of Lubbock TX, who actually got me approved, but there is no way I can bring myself to fly, and I can't drive home after the surgery. I've heard wonderful things about Dr Floyd, and his staff has been very nice when I have called his office.

Congrats! I am only 2months post op so I know a little bit about what your feeling. I am also a first time grandma, my grandson however is now 20 months old and I'm expecting a new little grandson in March. Your questions will be answered by your doctor. By the way, who is your doctor and what hospital will you be at or do you know yet. As for me, I returned to work after 4 weeks because I had the time. I drove after about 2 weeks. Do you know what procedure you're having yet. LAP or Open? I will watch for further post, don't worry it'll be fine!

Right now, all I know is that I was approved only for the RNY surgery. I don't really have a preference on lap or open, I will have to discuss that with the surgeon. Which one did you have? I have excellent health coverage, so I am not worried about the time. Whatever I need, I have available, but I don't want my co workers to have to pick up my share of the load for longer than necessary. If I go with Dr Floyd, and I won't know that for certain until I meet with him sometime next week, then I will be at Baptist on the NW expressway.

I am looking at Dr Floyd as my surgeon. I've heard wonderful things about him. I am not sure which one my insurance approved for, but once I know for sure, I will have to discuss it with the surgeon as to which one is better for me. I am in reasonably good health for someone needing this surgery - no outstanding issues like diabetes or anything. So I am looking forward to an uneventful surgery and recovery.

I had open RNY 12-17-03, 13 days ago I feel a little weak, if your work is physical the Dr. wants 6- weeks for open and about 3-Lap. Im still sore to the left of my incision, where they attached the old stomach to my inner abdomanal wall, that is what I have been told it may be sore a while. I was very nervous and excited all the way up to the minute they nocked me out then I awoke and it was done. With open RNY the pain is a little worse but they give plenty of meds. Who is you Dr. I had Dr, Totoro I'm one of his last he will no longer do these the 1st of the year.. Good Luck Peggy

Congratulations!!!! I'll look forward to hearing about the process and your results. I'm near Enid, and after my research, if I'm approved (which I hear is relatively simple with insurance company HURRAH!!!!) I'll use Dr. Walton at St. Mary's in Enid. GOOD LUCK!!! Gina.

Good luck back to you Gina. I'm actually in the city, so I am looking at Dr Floyd here in OKC. I hope your approval goes well. I was so upset when mine initially denied me. But I have to say, for those who can fly, check out Dr David Hall in Lubbock TX - they are the offices that got me approved, and they have been in constant contact with me since I first started answering questions on their website. The only reason I am not going to Dr Hall, is I have an ungodly fear of flying, and I don't think I can bring myself to get on a plane, and then have to change planes in Dallas. And, if things go well with Dr Floyd, I have friends here in the city who will come visit when I am in the hospital =).
