I have Blue Cross and Blue Shield of OK, Federal Employees Program. In reading my benefits book it indicates that I have to be 100 lbs. over my normal weight according to current underwriting standards. I have called Blue Cross and they will not tell me where I can find the current underwriting standards. I was told it was up to my doctor to decide if I am 100 lbs. over. I am 5'4 1/2" tall and weight 240.2 lbs. I would hate to have the surgery only to find out I don't meet BCBS FEP criteria. Can anyone tell me where I can find the underwriting standards or if I meet the criteria.

I have the same problem. I have insurance through my husband he is postal service. I have scheduled my surgery for September 11. I have spoke with insurance company on several occasions. They told me the very same story. I spoke with my doctor about the problem they said that most doctors go by your bmi rating. they want you to be at least a 40. I know that it is scary not knowing the results on if they will pay. My doctor said that as of now he has never been turned down by blue cross but he did say that some time they they will deny the first time just to see if patient will except that. I can promise you that I will not except it. I am the hundred pounds over per the doctor. I have a wonderful Doctor in Tulsa. Dr. Matt Bosquez he is very nice he even walks every saturday morning with his patients in the mall just to make sure they are getting their exercise. I want to wish you the best and I want to give you some hope. I will post again after my surgery and let you know how bc/bs is doing on paying the bills. As far as the standards I have checked quite a few sources no one seems to know for sure.
