Fall Roll Call...lets here about you!
I was in the same boat. I was so upset! I wanted my surgery so bad. I talked with my Dr. and he told me if I could get my sugar down and keep it down for 2 weeks then he would go ahead. I had been off my meds because of money issues for a two week period during that A1C so I knew my numbers were going to be high. He gave me a chance to show him I could do it. I increased my insulin and was very strict on my meal choices in order to do it, but I kept my sugar down below 175 most every day, all day, for two weeks. The problem was that increasing the insulin didn't allow me to drop the weight I needed to drop. I was 5 lbs off. I wrote down my readings 5 times a day to prove to them I was going to get it down. He agreed to go ahead. It can be done.
My A1C was 10.5 the middle of Jan and I had my surgery Feb. 11th. I was taking 6 to 7 insulin shots a day. My last A1C was 6.5 and I am only taking one pill a day. I have no doubt that when I lose the remaining lbs, I will be med free. Talk with your PCP about increasing your meds in order to get that sugar down within a good area. It's obvious that what you are doing right now is not working so you need to do something. Look at this site below. It will tell you where you need to be to achieve a lower A1C. Hang in there! You can do it.

I had VSG on July 29, so I'm just a little more than two months out. I'm down 54 pounds, 16 lost before surgery. I would like to lose 70 more. Right now I'm just enjoying the miracle of rapid weight loss — watching my arms and wrists and legs and feet get smaller.
I haven't eaten any of those forbidden foods (potatoes, pasta, rice, bread), but I do have a bit of a snacking problem. I'm trying to get a grip on that. I walk about 30 minutes three times a week, which is good enough for now, I'm told.
I really have learned a lot from the folks on OH, and I just wanted to take this opportunity to say "thanks a million" to everyone. I hope your autumn and holidays are full of big and small blessings.

Hi All,
I had VSG on 5/5/08 with Dr. Walton. I started the process in December 2007 at 378 with my blood pressure through the roof. The third day after surgery has really been the only time I've regretted the decision. The journey has been pretty amazing so far. This morning, I weighed 213, basically the same as I've been for the last 4 or 5 months. Still walking, jogging, running, and lifting weights. I feel like my shape is still changing, even though my scale really hasn't been moving.
It's been amazing - I wish I'd done it younger, but I'm glad I didn't wait until I was any older!
Here's some actual photographic evidence:
Before:
And after (this was on my 40th birthday in August - my wife and her friend thought it would be funny to buy me seersucker - but they'll be the real suckers when I'm sporting these lovely shades next spring!)
Best of luck to everyone!
John
