Hair loss

Okay I know they talked to me a little about possible hair loss after surgery, but wow it is coming out by the palm full.  I had a very thick head of hair before surgery (thank goodness) but now it is really looking thin even my friends and family have began to notice.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there something I may be low on vitamin wise? I have done very good with my vitamins except the last couple of week the calcium citrate has been gagging me.  I have been using the chocolate chewey bites and now they are just so grity.  Anyone found a good calcium citrate they like? Any suggestions appreciated quickly before I'm bald LOL.

It's completely normal and EVERYBODY goes through it.  Your post surgical body is re-allocating where your protein is going.  Since you're not getting as much and your body has been healing the protein goes to your muscles/organs first, hair and nails are going to be your body's last priority.  It WILL slow down and your hair should start coming back in,  usually around 6-8 months.  I'm in the middle of it right now and ended up chopping off all of my hair.

Some people swear by Biotin, a dietary supplement, and/or Nioxin, a shampoo formulated for hair loss.  Make sure you're keeping up on your protein and calcium, and maybe add zinc as well.  I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but it WILL get better.

well that's good to know and your surgery date was about 11 days before mine, so I guess this is what we are suppose to be doing.

If you had surgery in the last three months your hair was affected and you will lose some...plus hair grows in three month cycles so whatever your protein level was  3 months ago is now affecting your  hair and nails.  I use 2000 mcgs of biotin daily and have a weekly head massage and my hair is growing well...
I have had 13 surgeries in 22 months so hair loss is something I am very familiar with..My solution was to have my butt length hair cut to my shoulders and styled....hardest decision I ever made but it was worth it....
I even had it cut super short...frosted and now am a blond
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

thanks I try the biotin, my hair is already above my shoulders so I hate to cut too much off.  My husband already says I'm a differnt women so a new hairstyle may really throw him.

Patti is 100% correct.  I've suffered it as well.  I started taking Biotin and use Tresemme Damage Control shampoo and conditioner to help.  It stopped and I am slowly regrowing the lost hair.

Nioxin will regrow hair but if you stop you will lose it again.  It's a lot like Rogaine in that respect.

One thing I should mention to pre-op folks is that you should start taking Biotin supplements now.  Build up healthy hair prior to surgery to minimize the loss afterwards.  It *WILL* still happen but the Biotin may help.

Good luck!

I had my surgery about the same time as you.  I also am experiencing the hair loss.  I have been putting mine in a ponytail and I have lost a lot of hair.  I reached the 100 lb. mark today and so excited about that my hair can just keep falling out.
