Lap-Band or Bypass???

I posted this same question the Lap-Band board but I want to post it here too because I am desperate for information. I have been researching WLS for many years now and have decided to have it, then decided to not have, then decided to have it and on it goes. At this point I have decided that if I am ever going to lose weight I need the surgery. Now my question is which one to have??? I have 200 pounds to lose, and I am wondering if the lap-band will allow me to have this kind of result. I would much rather have the lap-band because it is less risky, you don't have dumping syndrome, and it is not as invasive. BUT if I am going to under-go something as drastic as WLS, I want the best possible outcome. Have any of you had 200 (or close to) pounds to lose and chosen lap-band. What have your results been? How much weight (on the average) have you lost per week? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

I know people who have lost 150 lbs with lapband , i think if you have the motivation and the desire you can lose as much as you want , just at a slower pace than the bypass. The choice is ultimitely yours , please ask as many questions as  you need to , this is a life changing event in your life .  Good Luck

I chose to have RNY after having a very frank discussion with the surgeon about what my goals were. I wanted to lose 130 pounds and get off all my diabetes meds. So far, at 6 months out I have lost 99.6 pounds and I am off all of my diabetes meds and high blood pressure meds. The only thing I take now is my depression and mood meds. I am down to 2 pills a day from 18 prescriptions. That is not counting the supplements I have to take, calcium, iron, multi vitamin.  I think you should go to an information meeting, schedule a consult and discuss what you want to achieve with the surgeon before you make a definite decision.

My goal is to lose 146 lbs, I am almost 1/2 way there at 11months from surgery.  I averaged a 2-3 lb weight loss for the first 8 months and now am losing about 1 lb every other week.  It is definitely a slower weight loss than the RNY or VSG but was the best choice for me.  I hope this information is helpful to you in your decision.  Please don't hesitate to ask more questions, everyone on the OK board is very helpful.

Your result with any surgery will ultimately depend on what you put into it and how well you work your new tool.  RNY people will be the first to tell you if you don't change your habits, once that window of opportunity closes, you regain.  Lapband people will be the first to tell you if you let the band do all the work, you are going to be too tight and lose your band.

I've lost 124 pounds with the band.

As others have stated, you have to chose what is best for you. For me is was the sleeve. It was presented to me as the "best of both worlds." It is restrictive as is the lap band, but you are less likely to have the dumping syndrome. Or so I have been told. I only got my sleeve about 5 days ago, so it is a little early to tell. However, if insurance is an issue, you can ignore this post. I have read that the lap band averages 1-2 lbs per week, which was way too slow for me. I too have about 200 lbs to lose and am a firm believer that the sleeve is the tool for me. Best of luck to you on your journey.

I can't speak personally (yet! hehe) on which would be best. I can say that I have three friends that have had each of the different options available. All three have lost significant weight and have kept it off 3+ years.

I think it has a LOT to do with your follow through. There is a section here of those that had surgery and have regained. I think you have to go into this with your eyes open and KNOW that this is NOT a magic pill!! This is a TOOL to help you lose weight.

There is still a TON of work that YOU will have to do. Changing eating, exercise, life style changes, habits. ect..

I wish you the best with your choices sweety! Get yourself a support system, and a group to help you as well as your family and have your mind in the right place as well. Knowing all the hard steps that YOU will have to take, ultimately alone (since no one can do this for you) and be sure you are ready.

Keep coming here and posting and sharing! This is the best thing I have found since making the choice to have the sleeve surgery.

Hi Natalie,

I have not had my surgery yet but like you struggled with surgery was best for me.  Originally I had my mind made up to get the band because, like you said, it didn't seem as drastic.  I want to make this work and decided that it was time to analyze what got me to the weight I am today and for me that is sweets and sugar.  So, I changed my mind and switched to wanting the GBP because I felt like I needed the kick in the pants that the GBP would give me, if I strayed and ate things that were bad for me.

When I went in for my consult with the surgeon, he asked which surgery I wanted and I told him that I wanted his opinion of which one was best for me and had an honest discussion with him about my eating habits, goals and weaknesses.  No one but you and your surgeon can decide what's best for you and out of the two of you, he's the most knowlegeable so discuss your concerns with him and ask for his input.
