I just sent this to KOCO, about the way the city is ripping everybody off.

I opened our water bill the other day to pay it and found that it was $97.77, about $25 more than it was last at this time last year. In looking at the water consumption it says that we used 23K gallons of water. We barely watered the yard in June & July, there's just no way. So I called the city to dispute the bill, and I was told that they switched systems and it caused a longer billing period. OK, fine, the billing period was only 41 days though, we didn't use 9K gallons more than the same month last year.

Today they sent out a field rep to check my meter. He said it was fine, and there's no leaks. He also went on to tell me that everybody in the city is getting hit with the same thing. His own use on his bill had almost doubled, and it's only him and his wife using the water at his house. I asked him what average use for a family of 5 would be, including watering a large yard (which we actually didn't do over the last 6 weeks or so, but just to have a high end figure). He said the average would be 5-10K gallons. Our highest use last year was in August, at 16K.

The field rep also told me that this has been going on for the last three weeks, since the system change-over. The systems weren't run side-by-side or piggybacked, so there was no accountability to be sure that everything went right. The reps were told to check for meter issues, then to just tell the customers to "call downtown if they still have a problem." I called yesterday, and was told that if there was nothing wrong with the meter than any "problems" would be on my end.

The city is adding a good 20% increase of use to everybody's bills, and essentially telling us that it's because of the system changes, and that it's our problem. The population of Oklahoma City is almost 445,000. If they're adding approximately $25 to each bill, that's about $11,125,000 that they're lifting from our pockets for services or goods not rendered.

A system change and longer billing period is not a valid excuse for such an increase in our billing.  An extra 9,000 gallons of use is not feasible for 11 extra days of billing.  In a time where every penny counts for every family, knowing what we pay for matters more than ever.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, good luck with this.  It's a government-run monopoly.  We have no choice in power, water, or gas.  Plain and simple:  they just don't care.  Where else would we go?

I am abitoch when it comes to the governement taking my money..so dear heart dont sit still on this run that beautiful mouth you have till someone pays attention to you.
I was charged years ago like that and I complained and complained so for one whole month I did not use any water from the city..not a drop...my water bill was still high. I went and raised hell and was told that they do read meters every month but do it in a quarterly bases that they average your bill from last year and add to it to comserate(SP) for the current year. I blew up and demanded that my meter be read monthly or I would go to the state energy board. kinda funny how my meter started being read monthly after that....
I also read my meters each month to keep the records in check...I refuse to pay more
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

I have no idea how to read my water meter.  I think I need to learn!

Wendell Edwards from channel 5 will be calling sometime today, I got an email from him this morning asking what would be a good time.  I should probably clean up my house a bit, eh?
