Debtfree!
(i wrote it in the title and OH took it off...???)
We had a lovely ride and I came right home and signed up for a bike ride next week. It was so great to reconnect with my bike again. I used to ride around the lake in Dallas a lot-so it was like good old time with a new friend.
If you are just starting out-building up "butt tolerance" is probably the most important thing. Try to ride every day, and gradually increase your time. I ride my stationary bike when I can't (or don't want to) go outside.
Ride till you are tired, maybe push a little further, but don't push too hard. Getting really sore is a good way to lose interest.
I wear bike shorts/pants even for neighborhood rides-because I hate getting my jeans caught in the chain (and I like the padding in the shorts). Go commando if you buy bike shorts-pantylines can cause problems beyond fashion-it can interfere with your circulation. I poo poo'd that until one day when I really did get my panties in a wad and went numb in one leg.
If you go out and back, remember not to go so far that you can't get back. (yes, I've done that too). If you have to get off to give your butt a break, it's better to keep walking with your bike. It will keep your hear rate up and your muscles warm so they don't get stiff. (I learned that one the hard way too).

THE day I'm leaving Cape Cod they are having a tour of Martha's Vineyard. I would consider it if it wasn't the day I was leaving, but the entrance fee is $100, plus boat fees, plus a hotel in the Vineyard or Wood's Hole....so that would be one expensive bike ride! Also, while I am bringing my bike and do want to ride every day-I may not want to have the discipline to be in shape for a 50k ride at the end of a vacation...LOL.
OH'ers- even slow biking burns a lot of calories and is very kind to your joints-knees and ankles will appreciate it.
