Speaking of protein

Just can not get the protein shakes down. I've tried and I've tried and I've tried. I am trying to find alternative ways to get the protein in. I eat a string cheese or two, a teaspoon of peanut butter, turkey, and cottage cheese (cottage cheese at every meal) everyday in place of the shake. I am only 16 days out so I can't experiment too much right now.

Looking for ideas for other protein sources that some of you are eating!

Hi.
One of my favorite protein meals is 4 meatballs from Subway. That's all I order (no bread, etc.). Here are the stats: 182 calories; 7 fat grams; 6 carbs; 22 protein grams; 0 fiber; 0 sugars. You could even melt some low-fat, part-skim mozzarella cheese on top, for even more protein. :)
Be sure to take small bites and chew well, of course. They're moist meatballs and very filling, even though they're small, 1.5 inches. Only now (7 1/2 months out) can I eat all 4 without taking forever to do it. :)
Another good source of protein that I enjoy is Kroger's frozen ****tail shrimp (tail on, not breaded). A serving size is 18 shrimp (they're fairly small). They're already cooked, so I just warm them up in a tablespoon of butter, with a bit of garlic. For the shrimp: 80 calories; 1 fat gram (the butter will add to that greatly, so figure that in to each of these stats, if you use it); 0 carbs; 18 protein grams; 0 fiber; 0 sugars.
I don't know if you can tolerate eggs well, but I enjoy a hard-boiled egg every now and then, for: 70 calories; 4.5 fat grams; 1 carb; 6 protein grams; 0 fiber; 0 sugars.
If I'm near the end of the day, and I need a bit more protein but don't want anything heavy, I'll eat a tablespoon or two of peanut butter. The natural is better (fewer carbs and sugars). :)
Here's a recipe for Tuna Muffins (actually Quiche would be a better word). You can substitute canned chicken or cooked ground beef. One fills me up. :)

Tuna Muffins
1 5-ounce can *Tuna (in water, drained)
3 eggs
2 c. 2% low-fat Cottage Cheese
Grated onion, salt, and pepper (to taste)
½ c. sunflower seeds (optional, but I like the taste, so I included it in the stats)

Stir together, and fill 7 sprayed muffin tins. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes (longer time makes for a more firm muffin). These taste good hot or cold.

Nutritional Info.:
Calories 186
Fat 8.8 g
Carbs 4 g
Fiber 2 g
Sugars .5 g
Protein 22 g

*You can substitute canned Chicken or cooked ground Beef. You’ll need to adjust the nutritional information. I recommend

http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp for keying in the ingredients and getting the stats.

Well, I hope this helps. Variety is the key.
Blessings,
Mary

What kind of protein shakes are you drinking? You probably just need to try different ones. I could not do them with milk at all. Try as you might, there just isn't going to be any way you can get the protein you need strictly through eating at this point.

Good luck! I know it gets frustrating.

Hi!
On my profile is a recipe for chicken enchilada's. I mixed this up and after making the enchilada's for my families. I put the rest of the filling in baby food containers and ate that! It was wonderful and filling. I loved this because I was still cooking for someone and benifited from it too....I live alone but still love cooking, so I just make stuff and send it to my daughters houses. Meatballs are a great one and you can make up what you can eat and freeze the rest. I also shredded up chicken and put in refried beans along with some grated cheese. I made mini quiche's in the small muffin tins. I made all kinds of mixtures with cheeses or ham and sausage....what ever I wanted in them. I freeze them and that is usually my breakfast menu. I make spaghetti sauce with meat and just top with cheese, or chilie. My menu is quite boring for now, because my tummy is different than before. I have said before and it's not really approved but I always made one protein drink a day that had 26g. of protein and with the Braums skim milk, it was 39 g. per serving. I used it to fill the gap on the protein amounts. It is hard when you can't eat much, to get much in. Spacing the protein drink out during the day helped. I could chug down a few ounces through out the day. Some people make ice cream with the protein and other great ideas....I'm sure you know EggFace's site for ideas.
To top it off.....I did and often do a Protein shot from Walmart. It is more than I like to spend, but on days, I can't choke down enough protein,...it works. It is 26 g. of protein for 3 oz. I think there is only 1 or 2 carbs too. It is like taking medicine to me.....I only do it off and on, on the days I am short on the protein.
Cottage cheese is always good. I put Pace Picante sauce in it.
It just takes time to adjust to this whole thing....Who would think we would have to retrain ourselves to eating??? It is just so much easier to pop open a can of refried beans and have that with the meat and cheese or plain, and coming from someone who is a personal chef....that's hard!! I love fish and often do that too....I use soy sauce and lemon to flavor it with a little garlic salt. I honestly felt like I had totally lost my creativity in cooking.....but it's coming back.
This is exactly why it is so important to take our vitamins!! It is vital!
Hang in there girl....I think it get's easier.
