Why?

Why do doctors who know NOTHING about bariatrics try to make us feel like failures or like we made a deathly decision with having gastric bypass?

I just got home from an annual appointment with a doctor that I've had for 17 years and he was two different people within the 10 minutes I was with him.  He was the pleasant person he has always been when he came in to the room originally and someone totally different after he found out I lost the weight with gastric bypass.

Makes me sick!  I'm finding a different doctor next year when I need my rx filled!

Sorry everyone, just needed to vent!

Hon,
Don't take it like that its takes everyone some time to get use to the "NEW" you, if you really like this doctor then don't let this one time change your mind. I wish I had something wise to say but then again its me and I never have anything wise to say. I have seen my fair share of doctors in the last couple of months, all I can say is if you like him and respect him as a doctor don't leave. Then again if you have too leave get your medical records transfered and then go key his car. ( I am joking please DO NOT key that mans car, ket me do it... he'll never know)

hee hee, Stephanie!

Thanks for the smile!!  I think I just need to cool down.  Like I said, he is just my "female" doctor who delivered both of my girls...  I only see him once a year, so I'm sure I'll cool down by next year!  lol

It just made me feel like crap to feel that way among the people I've known for so long who were always nice.

On a good note, they did verify my name and birthdate to make sure they had the right chart since I am so much smaller this year!  That felt good!

Thanks again!  I knew I could come here for encouraging words.  I'm feeling bad that I've been absent from you all for so long!

Some folks just don't get it. Doctors are not exempt from the not understanding obesity part either.  They recieve very little training in obesity and even less in bariatrics.  I am not excusing his behavior in any way- it was not acceptable.  But, they are only human and make poor choices in how to respond like the rest of us do.  He should have discussed your reason for choosing the path you did and then let it go.  He needed to meet you where you are now.  Sorry you had this experience.
I have maintained for one year at this point.  I am steady at -120 pounds.  =)

If you go back, tell him in no uncertain terms that his specialty is about a foot south of Dr. Broussard's and he has no opinion in the matter.  This was your choice to become healthy and not his and his comments are based on lack of knowledge.  Until he has a better understanding he needs to keep his opinions to himself and not deride others for their choice.

Even better, write a letter to him.  Explain your situation and that he made inappropriate comments that affected you.  He needs to know and he needs to be educated.

I'm lucky.  My PCP has been with me every step of the way.  She's fantastic and I wold recommend her to anyone.

I am so sorry you had that experience.  I can sympathize as my primary doc took 3 years to convince that I needed this surgery, the good news being that he kept awesome records of my weightloss attempts so the insurance was quick to approve me.  My Gyn has been very supportive of me in my journey.  As a nurse I run into both sides of the issue & I have to agree with Winnie, ignorance is a key problem even with medical professionals.  Keep your chin up!

Dot, I'm sorry he was a jerk.  I like Winnie's idea of putting it in writing to him.  Maybe he needs to be educated about WLS and you are the perfect person to show him the success that can be had.  Then again, it might be good to find another Dr.  LOL!  -Amy

Dot, what a horrible feeling that must have given you. I had a PCP that sent the referral for my gastric bypass who was always on me about my weight and said at least I was finally doing something about it even if it was the "surgery". Grrr...After that I started looking for a new doctor and found one that supports bariatric patients. I'll never for get the first time she saw me and found out I had LAP RNY. She shook my tummy and made a comment how my skin wasn't bad at all. Ha!
