Not New But Have Been Inactive for 2 years
Hi everyone. I am not new to OH but it has been a looooong time since I have been here (like 2 years.) I FINALLY went to the pre-surgery seminar that starts the process for surgery for the doc that I have chosen (Dr. Keith.) It was today. I am pretty bummed because I found out today that there is a great big fat chance that it is going to take 9 months before I can have surgery. I knew I had to wait 6 months because BCBS Insurance requires 6 months of doc supervised weight loss and I haven't had that in the past 2 years. But today I found out my secondary insurance--Medicare (I was on SSDI for 6 years is why I have Medicare) requirs 3 months from the initial consultation until surgery. So it's 6 months til they will schedule and 3 months after that before the surgery...... I am so bummed. I have made a commitment to eat healthy and exercise regularly for 6 months so I know I will lose weight from now until then but that extra 3 months has really got me frustrated. I know if I do nothing now I will regret it in 9 months so I am determined to not let this bump stop me, I just need some big time encouragement. Please help!!!
Hang in there. Many of us had road blocks on our way to surgery. I started in Feb and didn't have surgery until July. The extra time really helped me get a jump start on my weight loss and helped me be more successful with my surgery. Hang in there!!!

Hi Natalie,
Please don't give up and try to take the time in blocks instead of looking at the big picture. I started my process last year in September. I started out with a seminar. I thought I would have surgery rather quickly, as the insurance I had at the time didn't require a supervised diet or a weight history....but... in December my employer changed insurance to Aetna, which required either a 6-month or a 3-month supervised diet; I opted for the 3-month diet, and let me tell you...it FLEW by. I ended up losing 22 pounds in the process and my submission to my insurance on the 11th of June and an approval on the 17th. I am now scheduled for surgery for July 7th.
My advice is just go for it. Time will fly by. I, too, was very frustrated that I had to do the diet, but in the end I was happy I did it, as I feel it helped prepare me for what is expected after I have my band surgery. You will be glad you went ahead and started with everything. Never give up on something you truly want, because even with the bumps it's just a test to see how bad you really want something.
Good luck!

Hi, Natalie.
I can understand your frustration and disappointment, but it won't change anything, and it could adversely affect your ability to lose as much pre-op weight as you can. Just think--before you made the decision to really pursue weight-loss surgery, there wasn't even a glimmer of hope that you'd be able to lose weight and keep it off (at least if you're like 97% of overweight people). Now that you've made the decision, there is a goal to shoot for--no matter how many months down the road it is. Just take each day as it comes, and make every day count. Each day is one day closer to your dream!
Blessings,
Mary
