Coffee Question

Has anyone's life drastically improved by giving up caffeine?  I'm still struggling with it-now is the time, I'm detoxed from it due to surgery, etc, but struggling with truly committing.

Absolutely.  I had given up caffiene for a good while before surgery, but for some stupid reason I started drinking it again for a few weeks.  I think it was when my mom was here.  I realized just how much better I sleep when I'm off caffiene, and my blood pressure, which I've had problems with since I was a kid, went down.

After surgery I quit taking my HCTZ, since it's a diuretic.  My BP at my appointment today was 110/70, the lowest it's ever been while not on meds.

It's hard, because I'm still a caffiene junkie so I do crave it, but now that I'm so concious of how much better I feel it does help.

Deb,
I gave it up for along time and started back. And now i feel more tired all the time and like I cant get enough to drink. Plus it lowers your iron level...I am trying to quit but dang its hard
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

I'm going to commit to decaf coffee.  I don't drink soda, and most of the tea I drink is naturally decaf.  I can do this.  Actually, I already have done it, just keeping up with it is the killer.

I love my coffee.  I didn't drink a lot of coffee prior to WLS but...now I drink a LOT.  It's one vice I've note willing to give up at this time.  I have had good labs every time so my iron levels have not gone down but I do take iron supplements.  I personally don't see a reason or need for me to give me to give it up.  I did do caffeine free but now I do the regular kind.  I have not been drinking as much this summer but I do at least 3 cups now.  Am I missing something?  Is there a reason to give it up?  I know it can work as a diruretic but I drink my 64 plus oz of water every day tooI guess my question is...did I miss that meeting or instructions?  I was under the impression that after a few months from surgery caffiene was ok??

I've had a lifelong problem with iron-and it gets worse as I get older (and I don't menstruate-had a hysterectomy).  I've been reading a lot about nutrition lately (as I was busy starving to death LOL) and I have figured out the amount of coffee I drink is related to a lot different problems.

I've gotten so caffed up I've broken out in hives-I like my stuff STRONG.  So, definitely none while I am healing-but I'm going to make the switch to decaf for good and see if that helps.

For me-the more run down I get, the more coffee I drink, and I think it's a vicious cycle.  But, it didn't have anything to do with my current issues-a hernia is a structural thing.  I just want to take advantages of the enforced detox to go ahead and give it up.

That's good.  I'm sure I would benefit from no caffeine as well but I guess I'm not ready quite yet to give it up!!!  I'm glad you are healing though and learning more and more about your body!!!  It bites getting older doesn't it?  I can say that because I am too!!!

I gave up caffeine for a while and I did start sleeping better. But that could have been because I was drinking a glass of tea every night with dinner. I now drink one, maybe two, cups of coffee in the morning and I haven't noticed any change.

I love caffeine!  They can take it away from when when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers...

But more power to you if you're breaking the addiction!!

The physical part is broken.  The mental part is still a struggle.

I kicked it once after surgery-was off for six weeks with a leg thing and had none.  Went back to work, went down to Starbucks and my heart almost stopped with the first triple venti latte-and I was back the next day and the next.....oh yes, with a Starbucks in your building-the addiction can run deep.

We'd go down at 3 and get a venti then work till 10-crazy stuff.
