constipation cure (I think)

Hi, Everyone.
My family thinks I'm obsessed about having a regular bowel movement, but when you can't, it quickly becomes a major life focus!
Anyway, I've been on a mission to find what works for me. Early on, the Miralax worked great, but then I'd feel sick every time I used it (even in various doses). I've used enemas, but who wants to do that daily!
I ordered the "Smooth Move" herbal stimulant laxative tea bags (16 in a box for $4.99 at drugstore.com), but, after a few weeks, I found that the sienna in it was too irritating to my system (you were right, Debra).
I decided that letting the tea bag steep for 10 minutes was too long, so I reduced the steep time, which helped greatly. No more pain in the bathroom. However, I got to where I didn't care for the taste. What to do, what to do...
I ordered the Creamy Hot Cocoa Mix (by WonderSlim) from BariatricChoice.com (box of 7 packets for $7.99). You're supposed to use 6 oz. of water, but it was too creamy for me, so I use 8 ounces. Nutrition Facts: 70 calories, 1g fat, 220mg sodium, 200mg potassium, 6g carbs (1g fiber, 3g sugars), AND 12g protein!
This is what I do now, and it is working like a charm for me:
Daily, I heat up 1 cup water in the microwave for 1 minute. Then I put in 1 Smooth Move tea bag and dip it 20 times in the water. I then remove the tea bag and add 1 packet artificial sweetener (optional).
I then open 1 packet of the hot cocoa mix and slowly stir it into the tea water. If you put the whole packet in at once, it seems to clump up. I then put the cup back into the microwave for another minute.
I have this in the afternoon or evening. I'm not a coffee drinker, so this is my time to relax, and it helps with my protein total for the day. The cost works out to be $1.50 a cup. I ordered 10 boxes of the tea bags and got free shipping, as well as 5% of the cost back in drugstore bucks, which I then used off the sale price of Prilosec OTC. :)  I ordered enough of the hot cocoa to get free shipping, too.
Anyway, I know that those of us who've had WLS tend to suffer from constipation, especially until we can eat more vegetables, fruit, and fiber, so I wanted to share.
Blessings,
Mary

LOL. I never thought of that! Oh well, no doubt I've been the butt of several jokes (sorry, couldn't resist). LOL.

I'm glad you have found something that works for you.  I had such a problem with constipation early on I was totally miserable.  I have NEVER in my life had an issue with it either.  I did use Miralax and tried the tea and they helped but not much.  I finally was able to conquer my beast with my diet.  I found that when I added just a little bit of fruit to my diet it keeps me regular.  I usually mix some with my cottage cheese and I enjoy it as well.  Good luck to you and I hope everything keeps coming out ok in the end!!! LOL

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

I take bluebonnet brand Calcium Magnesium Citrate each day. Two Tablespoons give me 1200 mg calcium citrate, 800IU Vita d and 600 mg magnesium citrate. As long as i take this dose each and every day, I am regular.
I know it is the mag citrate in this dose that helps me. The only thing i have wondered about is if this is too much mag citrate but my doc seems to think this is just fine for me. I had my first bloodwork done on Friday so we shall see.
For the constipation issue tho...it works miracles!

Hi, Leah.
Magnesium citrate. Hmm...I'll have to check that out. It would be nice to get and stay regular. It seems like a full-time job (like so much of this WLS journey). I'm not complaining, though. I'm very grateful. :)
Blessings,
Mary

I hear ya! I never had this problem prior to surgery. But I am not complaining either! I have lost 58 lbs! yay.
I buy the Bluebonnet Calcium Mag citrate at the health food store. It runs around $11-12 bottle and the bottle lasts for about 3 weeks. I made the mistake of running out once....not good!!
