I am 22 I only have 19 more pounds to loose before I can have surgery.  Is it normal for people my age to have the surgery I am excited about getting a new life but am concerned about how my diet will change when I have surgery and am still in school. I Just kinda want to know if any one else has had surgery while they were under the age of like 28 or something?

I can't help you there but I do know that if I had the way to have done this earlier in life I would have. You will have to learn new eating habits and you will have to force yourself to take that time for yourself. I wish you the very best in the world. It is a wild and wonderful journey.

I am 31 now, but I was 26 when I had my RNY gastric bypass.  I would have done even earlier, if I could have!  I think you're very smart for doing it so young :)

Yes, I had surgery before my 28 b-day and would not change that. I saw mine as being more preventive than anything else. I had tried SOOO many diets and I roller coaster-ed all the time. Therefore, this was the best option for me. I would do it earlier if I had known that it was going to do so much to help improve my quality of life. Your diet will change, but you must honestly weigh your options...Would you rather stay with the same diet and have it adversely effect you later in life, or would you rather possibly give up those things in your diet that are not going to do you any favors? I will be one of those people that will never be able to give up everything I love (food wise) forever, but moderation is key. It is work, but this surgery is a tool and I think anyone that puts his/her mind to it can make it exactly what it is designed to be.

Best of luck to you with your decision!

Wish the surgery would have been perfected like it is now when I was 22.  Gez, how much better my quality of life would have been through out these years.  There is a guy in Louisiana on the men's forum that was 21 when he had his, and he is in school.  After 10 months, he reach his goal.  He looks amazing, and very happy.  If this is what you want, go for it.  We have such a great group of people here on the Oklahoma forum, and welcome, but come on over and participate on the men's too.  Great bunch of guys, but will definately give you a kick in the pants when you need it.  Wait, they do that here too, huh Glitter?  But just a little nicer (most of the time).  Michael

I WISH I had had it done at 22.  Enjoy your extra years of health-"NORMAL" is a myth anyway-what the heck is normal?  Thin is not normal, because most of the world is heavy or obese (at least most of the western world).  Normal is far over rated.

I'm 25 and I just had my RNY about 3 weeks ago. I feel like it's really up to the individual. If you feel like your ready and committed to changing everything you have ever believed or been taught to think about the way you eat and the way you view food in your daily life, and you feel like your ready to make the changes necessary to be sucessfull with this surgery then go for it no matter what age. But if even part of you thinks that you are getting this surgery to be the answer to all your weight problems, without any effort on your part, then wait, and do more research. As long as you understand that this will require major changes on your part, then I say the younger the better. There are benefits to starting out young the preventive aspects are part, but also your skin has more elasticity and the surgery itself is easier when your younger.

Thanks everyone Your right I know it is a incredible opprotunity and tool to get me started on the right road. I am haveing to make the tough choices and stay on track it is something that I am determined to do. I really look at surgery as a fresh start to be able to start making right choices again. in food or working out or any of the above. I am excited Its stressful trying to get there but God is good and im very determined. It will happen for sure. Thanks again and God bless

Besides, isn't this YOUR journey?  Nobody can tell you what is best when considering WLS.  That's up to you and your doc.  Normal also has no meaning here.  Do what you think you need to do to be healthy.

If it means more quality of life for longer then it's worth it.  Knowing what I know now, I certainly would have done it at that age.  I would have done it at age 10.  Then maybe I would have had a little different adolescence.
