Has anyone had Meniscus tear?

Good morning everyone!  I love spring break!  Just taking it easy this morning, drinking coffee in my pajamas.  It's so nice!  I do have a question.  I went to the doctor last week with my knee pain, and they think it's a meniscus tear.  I'm having an MRI on Wednesday.  However, my brother had the same thing in the fall and he keeps telling me not to have surgery on it.  I know he has arthritis in his knee, and that's part of the reason why it still hurts him.  He took some shots in his knee (rooster comb?) but can only take so many for that.  Anyway the doctor showed me my xray and there is no arthritis in there, she said it's very clean.  My question is have any of you had surgery for a meniscus tear and how do you feel since the surgery.  I don't really want to go through the surgery and all that if it's not going to be any better.  I'm sure not enjoying being slowed down either.  I just never know when it's going to catch and I've nearly fallen from it several times.

Help!

Thanks!

Hugs,
Marsha

Hey lady,
Sorry to hear that I have been there done that and got the T-shirt. I had my acl/pcl and my meniscus torn. They were from a sports injury but I was about 16 I believe. GO have it done I waited until I was 18 and it was worse then than if I would have had it fixed earlier. I never really got back to 100% in my knee but I was okay with 90%. My range of motion in that knee is not as good as the other one and I can tell you when it is about to rain or snow bc my knee hurts so bad. But then again that could just be the arthritis. The surgery is worth it, even on my bad days it is nothing compared to what I woke up with everyday. That is just my two cents on the surgery hope others can help.

Marsha

I have never had problems with my knees yet. Now my mom on the other hand has had tearings in both knees and had both of them fixed and she did great. My friend has had a tear for more than a year and is in constant pain my advice is I would have it fixed.

Thanks Stephanie and Shantell,

I'm going Wednesday for the MRI and I expect to have surgery the Wednesday before Easter so that I can be off of wor****il Monday.  That is my hopes anyway.  I just want it to be better.  It sure is slowing me down and I don't like that.  It hurts pretty badly and I'm not used to not being able to do things because my knee hurts.  I want to relive my childhood, not be stuck on the sidelines now!

Hugs,
Marsha

I had the exact same thing and has to postpone my WLS for a month because of it.  The surgery was easy and recovery was easy.  My knee is a millions time better but when I work out I can still sometimes tell that knee is a little weaker than the other one.

Marsha,
I am jealous! For the spring break, that is - not the knee thing :)
I had meniscus tears in both knees at different times and had the surgery and had no issues to speak of.  The first one I tried to tough it out and waited for years but it was the hardest to recover from and required the most work from the surgeon.  I learned my lesson so the second one I had surgery right away and they are in great shape from that.  I do have rheumatoid arthritis which causes me knee pain, but before I got the arthritis, my knees were great from the surgeries.  I say don't wait b/c it can become unstable and cause you to fall risking even worse injuries.
They have minimized the technique quite a bit so it is not as hard to get over these days.  We will pray for you!

Camille and Amy,

Thanks so much for giving me advice.  I thought I could live with it until Summer, but I don't think I can.  It is really debilitating to me, so if I can get it repaired just before we're out for Easter, that'd give me a day I don't have to repay my salary.  This being out of days is killing me.  Never fails for me when I don't have the time to take off, that's when I need it most.

Thanks again girls!

Hugs,
Marsha

PS:  Amy, will you be at the support group meeting Thursday night?

I  had a knee scope done last November.  My knee still bothers me due to the level of osteoarthritis  in my knee.  However, It was worth it. It has bought me a few more years until I will have to get a total knee replacement.

Yes ma'am. Had it about 10 years ago (or so...can't really remember) and PT didn't help and it hurt SO bad at times....arthritis occurs even without a tear, we just get it by being active...but about 2 days on crutches, lots of ice and walking on it, I was back to work in a couple more days...there's no way I could have done WITHOUT the surgery. I couldn't walk down stairs, (but could walk up, go figure), had severe pain getting into a car and some pain getting out, pain after sitting at a 90* angle for too long (work) and so this was absolutely necessary. Orthopod thought it was a dime sized tear but turned out to be bigger than a quarter and surprised him. PT would have never worked for this injury. I can do SO MUCH more after surgery--it's certainly not worth the constant pain!!

I had the MRI this morning and will see the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow morning.  I just hate those MRIs.  It was not as bad as the one I had on my head, but it was bad enough!
