Hey guys question liquids are going down okay but when I eat it does not matter what I try it either comes back up as some liquid or just hurts like a son of a gun. Could it be a stricture or maybe I am eating too fast? I don't think I am but right now I second guess everything, what do you guys think?

Sounds like you are either eating too much or too fast or too big of bites, or all of the above.

How big are your bites? Are you using 1/4 of the spoon, that is what I did. I also got a timer and waited 2 minutes between bites when I started eating. Try smaller bites and waiting a minute and half or two minutes between bites and see if that helps. I have a timer I can give you if you need one. I don't use it anymore :)

You're probably eating too fast. From what I understand, it hurts to drink, too, if you have a stricture. Take care.

Stephanie,

This has been my experience since the strictures I had at the beginning.  I would eat, and lots of times it would come back up, or I would wish that it would.  I was to the point that I was scared to try to eat, but I have made myself slow down, take smaller bites, and spread my meal out over an hour or so, and it has helped so much.  I don't like to do that, because I don't like cold food, but at least I'm getting some food down and it's not hurting.  Try taking smaller bites, taking your time, and stopping when you feel that first twinge of fullness.  That's what I have to do, or I'm going to throw it  up.  Now some foods I still can't eat...white meat chicken...cannot do it.  I don't know if everyone is like that or it's just me, but white meat is way too dry and it makes me sick every time.  Eggs are something else that I just can't tolerate.  I've tried several times because Jess told me not to give up on food that didn't work the first time, but I'm pretty much giving up on eggs....not to be gross but they just don't set well coming back up.  LOL

I hope this helps, and I hope you start feeling better soon.  I was worried that I wasn 't getting enough nutrition, but I think I'm figuring this thing out!  If you are keeping liquids down, I would try this first.

Hugs,
Marsha

Yay!  You're keeping some liquids down!  Boy, do we have low expectations when that is exciting!?

I agree with everyone else.  For the first 4 months, I was sick with the foamies at least once a day, sometimes twice, and would throw up.  After an appt with Dr. W, and Jess, I was told to eat slower.  I thought I was, but apparently not.  Dr. W was thinking a possible stricture, but wanted to wait since I could drink (but slowly).  I slowed down even more, waiting a minute or two between smaller bites, and really paying attention to how the little bad boy tummster was reacting.  The least little bit of reaction, I stopped until he calmed down.  Like Marsha, you only get one or two bites of hot or warm food, the rest of the meal is cold, but so be it.  It has helped alot and still get sick about once a week, but I feel it is because I wasn't paying attention.  Dry food also doesn't set well.  Had a piece of salmon last night.  Was dry, and took it slow, but still got really sick and threw up.  Hope it gets better.  Hang in there.  Michael

Hey girl-

I had a stricture removed last Wednesday and prior to that, food wouldn't go down or hurt so bad if it did. Fluids went down fine for a week or so and then they stopped as well. Even after having the stricture removed, food still doesn't stay down and hurts like hell. Maybe I'm still taking too big of bites...not sure, I feel like I'm taking bites worthy of feeding a toddler. Does anyone know, if it is possible to have another stricture already?

Hope you feel better soon.

My experience has been much like Michaels with getting th efoamies and even some severe pain from eating to much or too fast. and once it is messed up from getting sick I can forget eating anything for several hours.

I've had the same issues lately.........so I have got to slow down..........but I also when I like something have a habit of eating it until my heart is content............we as WLS patients can no longer do that.........................
  • Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose.  Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email.  I'll answer it as soon as possible.
