Ok so my PCM told me at my clearence apt that he listed diabetes as one of my co~morbidities for my paperwork. I knew my BS was pre~diabetic levels. Well for the last few weeks I have been feeling horrible. I have a lot of symptoms of diabetes (extreme thirst, frequent urination, extreme tiredness). So lastnight Hubby told me to go buy a BS test meter. I dragged my butt outta bed @ 11 (I have wicked kickin insomnia, I usually dont even get to sleep till 5am and then it is fitfull) went to walgreens bought the meter & all the supplies that go with it. So I tested and my BS was 449... Needless to say I am freaking out.

Is there anyone in the OK bunch who has BS issues who can give me some tips or insight into what I need to be doing to get this number down?

I have absolutely no knowledge about diabetes, no one in my family has it. So Im at a total loss..
Thanks
Kim

You NEED to callyour PC doc.  That's extremely high.  Normal is 80-100.  That's actually a dangerous level and you should be on something to pull it down.  You should watch what you are eating.  No real soda or sweets at all right now and watch your carbs.  DO CALL YOU DOC right away and see if he can see you!!!  DO NOT WAIT!!!  A better indication of BS is a fasting blood sugar reading in the morning but I'm thinking he'll put you on insulin for the time being.  I was on insulin until the day of my surgery.  My surgeon wouldn't do my surgery either until I had good numbers.  High blood sugars are not condusive to healing after surgery.  Please call your doctor's office right away and let them know all your symptoms and your readings.

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

Fleemore is right, go see your PCM now!! I know its Friday If your clinic has night or weekend hours go to that, to document your blood sugar.  Then make sure you get an apt for Monday.  If they don't have any appt left for Mon ask to talk to the help nurse so she can fit you in asap.  Start to cut out all sugars and white carbs.  Try to eat "atkins" for now, like you would have to eat if you already had WLS.

Like you I am the only one in my family that has diabetes and I had no idea what to do.

I'm hoping you were able to get in to see your doctor today. If not, this is very important. Do not eat any type of bread, pasta's, rice or sugar items this weekend. You need to talk to your doctor but if you can't until Monday, then you need to do what you can to control your sugars until then, which means only eating complex carbs, like green veggies and protein.  I had tons of issues with this before the surgery. You will probably be put on meds for now, but until you get in to see them please watch everything that goes into your mouth. I had horrible issues with this. They will need to do an A1C to find out what your blood sugars have been averaging over the past 3 months. Most doctors require your A-1C to be below 8 and they would like it to be around 7. Below you can see the A1C compared to blood sugar readings. I had many in the 400's in Dec and caused me all kinds of problems. PM me after your apt and I will chat more with you about this. I am so sorry this has jumped up there.

Hi Kim,

I'm diabetic and for a while a few months ago my sugars were bouncing all over the place. But I do agree with everyone else, CALL YOUR PCP and get in as quick as possible.  Take a BS check first thing in the AM when you get up.  A friend of mine who is also a Homopathic DR. told me to take tsp of Cimmamon wait an hour check your sugar. she would call me every hour to see how it was doing. and would tell me to take another tsp of cinnamon until it was under control.  Cimmamon is a natural sugar buster.  When I did that my sugars did start to come down and now they are under much better control.   She then mailed me a bottle of her sugar buster pills that she makes.  They really did help.

I hope you get it checked and this helps you.

Just got home from the ER. I called hubby an he was in the hospital complex and went to specimen collection & they told him to have me get to the ER ASAP.. So I did. They yelled at me for driving myself & then fast tracked me to the triage where my sugar was 483. So they immediately got me to the back(felt kind of bad cuz the waiting room was full & some ppl were complaining about me goin in so soon) anyhoo. I got hooked up to IV's did blood work & urine( they said my urine was like a Mt DEw it had so much sugar in it!. They gave me insulin, 2 bags of fluids, and retested me and I was at just above 300. So they let me come home. I have a rx to take in the am after I test, and will see my PCM on Monday.

I am totally worn out, just had a salad and a tall glass of water and Im gonna lay in bed an watch tv for the rest of the evening.

Thanks for all the advice & concern. Hopefully I can get this undercontrol asap & wont have any delays in getting surgery to correct the sugar issues.

I am so glad you went to the ER. It is also so exhausting to have your BS go so high then drop. The up's and downs are so hard on your body. You can do this before your surgery. You can. It will be work but you CAN do it. I'll be praying for you. Like i said, just avoid any bread, potatoes, rice or pasta all weekend becareful of caffine too. Caffine really caused mine to jump up. We only figured that out after I had taken everything else out of my diet. Becareful all weekend. I am so glad you are having this surgery soon. It may help to save you from the many complications that go with this.

Glad you went in to get it checked out.  Remember that when you check has a lot to do with your results.  If I remember right, you should be testing when you haven't eaten for at least a couple of hours, and when you haven't exercised recently.  I found that after WLS my blood sugar tanked and my symptoms were the result of low blood sugar.  Hope it's all resolved soon!
