VSG/RNY - Out of pocket - Dr. Broussard
RNY on 12/27/17
I'm fixin to see Dr. Broussard tomorrow. I'm going to talk to him about the RNY and VSG. I have to get something done. I had a lap band last year and it did not work out for me. My insurance BCBS Federal will not pay for my surgery because there is nothing wrong with my band. I do have co morbidities & I'm concerned about my health and I need a surgery that will help me get results. Thanks. Any comments???
Virgina,
What happened with the band? As you probably know after 6 months you can only get rny after having the band.
I am trying to fingure out if insurance says there is nothing wrong with the band why are you wanting to be converted? I would suggest this to ya..before having another surgery. Try living the rny post op life..Eat only 4 ounces of food at meals..and do the shakes and supplememnts. I did this before surgery and I lost weight..It will show you rather or not you can handle being a post rnyer....life post op can be difficult.
Good luck to ya!

being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it
Pattye had a very good answer. None of these procedures are "magic". They are all simply a tool that have very rigid requirements after the procedures. Some might refer to the RNY or Sleeve as the "easy way out" but, then again the band is not the easy way out either. Maybe you just need more "restriction" or a fill with your band. Good luck to you.
I honestly don't know the prices now. I think they went up some time last year so I can't help you there. But Dr. B will let you know and give you good advice. I guess you're going to have the band removed and then convert to VSG or RNY? If you have been unable to lose weight with the band, you would think your insurance should cover a revision. How long have you had your band and how much have you lost?

Hi Glitter Gal,
I know you have read my messages and replied to me before. Thanks so much for your input.
Yes, I'm going to get a revision from the lap band to the VSG. The RNY is $20 Grand. The VSG about $12 1/2 Grand. The insurance will only pay, if there is a technical problem with the band.
With the band I started at 199, 189 before surgery, went down to 183. Now, I'm 205. A bit fustrating!!! I know there is no turning back. I'm getting the revision done, just not loving band.
I don't mean to be negative about the band. It was not my cup of tea!!! It's my body so I have the right to order something else.......Do you know what I mean??
Thanks GlitterGal, you are doing awesome. I hope I will do the same......

I love my sleeve! I also had to figure out if I wanted RNY or VSG and finally decided on the sleeve. Long story short, you can out eat any surgery so I decided to go with the surgery that was less invasive, less expensive and doesn't change the way the food enters or exits the tummy. I was also worried about the malabsorption of any medications that I might need to take later in life.
Anyway, I wish you much good luck. If it makes you feel any better, I still weigh 193 so you're doing pretty good! You're a lightweight!

I'm curious-what happened with your visit to Dr. Nelson?
I know the band is not for everyone, so I'm not trying to say that you are wrong in any way for wanting to revise, but if your problem is that you ate around the band, you will be able to do that with the other surgeries as well. None of the surgeries fixes our heads, I only WISH.
I just hate to see you spend more money, more risk, when the problem is still going to be with you.

Well, I decided not to go with Dr. Nelson. She wants me to stay with the band. I'm not willing to stay with the band. I know it's helped a lot of people. I'm just not one of them to work with it. I know that I can eat around the next surgery I get, however, I'm bound and determined not to do that. I have already changed my eating choices & portions now and have started on a bike exercising. I 'm going for the sleeve procedure with Dr. Broussard, Weight Wise in Edmond. I will have to do self pay and that is not a problem. I believe it will be worth it. I hope that you wish me luck.
