VGB? I'm confused about what that is?

I've noticed some people have VGB on their profile but later in posts they say they had the sleeve.  Is the VGB a sleeve surgery because I was thinking it was some kind of lapband or something (B for band?).  Anway, can someone tell me what it means?

From what I know, VBG (or VGB, have heard it both ways) or Vertical Banded Gastroplasty is not as common of a procedure as it was some 4 or 5 years ago, even.  I heard more about it on the forum back then, than I do now.  It's definitely nothing like the sleeve and it's even different than lapband.  It's like a mix of band and RNY bypass.  I believe it had some issues a few years back and is now more commonly used overseas, but I could be mistaken.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG): This procedure is becoming the most frequently used restrictive operation for weight control. It is less extensive than the RNY (above). Both a band and staples are used to create a small stomach pouch. The procedure works best on individuals who are not binge eaters.

Hope this helps!

My friend had VBG several years ago and has been very successful with it.  She doesn't have to go for a fill or anything like Lapband.  When I was at my consult with Dr. Walton, I believe he told me that it isn't done anymore.  Maybe he meant they don't do it at WW, but I misunderstood.

Okay, thanks Marsha.  I am wondering though if a coulple of people on here had typos when they set up their profile because they show they are recent weight wise patients and had the VGB.

Amy, The VBG is where a small circular hole is made in the stomach just below the esophagus. A small pouch is then made with staples. A band is then placed around the outlet of the pouch. This keeps the pouch from stretching but also delays the emptying of food so you will feel full longer.

The band can cause an obstruction or perforation. The weight loss is slower than with the RNY because there is no dumping or malabsorpsion. One year post op patients usually lose only about 50% of their weight.

thanks Rita, so is weight wise doing these surgeries now?  A couple of the profiles I noticed showed they were recent (in the last 6 months) weight wise patients and had the VGB.  I was just curious on all the options available....not for me cuz I have my amazing tool! LOL!  But just like to keep myself informed!

No Amy, we are not doing the VBG's. I doubt that we ever will. Who knows though. The profiles you saw probably meant the Lap Band and they just got the two confused if they were weight wise patients.

Well I have to fess up.  I did have VGB on my profile but I didn't realize it until I went to put in my surgery date.  It was purely a typo because it's just right above the VSG.

That might be a possible explanation???
