Supervised diets and suppressants

Hi All,

I was needing some input as to whether any of you who have had to undergo the 3 or 6-month supervised diets if any of your doctors have prescribed a suppressant for you to use.  I went to see my doc today and he asked me what was hardest for me when dieting, and I told him hunger.  So, he wanted me to try a suppressant and prescribed Pristiq.  It's actually an antidepressant but it helps with hunger.  So, I will get that filled tomorrow.  But, just wanted to know if anyone else has used this during their supervised diets?

Thank you ;O)

I've had to be on a 12 month supervised diet! The first Dr. I went to put me on phentermine (sp) along with several other supplements that I had to take throughout the day...I hated it. I'm not a terrible pill taker anymore, but I like to do it once and get it out of the way being on a scheduel is NOT for me. SO I switched PCP's and found one that didn't push suplements. Personally I feel alot better with out the chemical appitite supressants, most all of them make me jittery or give me the yawns! To me it feels unnatural to be hyped up and not be able to stop yawning!! But my mom takes them and they don't affect her that way. I haven't heard of Pristiq but be careful some of thoes antidepressants can have nasty side affects when you stop takeing them especially! Good luck!!

With the weight wise program, you have to do it cold turkey,  I had to lose 10% on my own and will power got me through.  A lot of protein shakes too..

Good luck,
Sheila

I had to do the 6 month pre-op diet for my insurance.  Basically my insurance needed a monthly record of my weight and what I was doing to try to loose weight (i.e. Weigh****chers, Jenny Craig, Atkins) during that time.  I am on antidepressants and I can say that it seems like when my medication gets changed I will go through a week or so of little to no appetite but then it comes back.  As others have said coming off of them can be a real b*tch and make you feel worse than before you started taking them.

My sister and I both took Welbutrin ER while we were dealing with my Mom's passing away.  She said it did make her appetite less.  It made me feel like someone was stabbing an ice pick in my teeth anytime I got stressed.  I stopped after 3 months and had no further problems and my sister took it for a year and it helped her loose 30 lbs.

My husband took regular Welbutrin to quit smoking and he had a severe adverse reaction where he was seeing people who weren't there and had suicidal thoughts.  It was very scary!!  The Dr. said if you really don't have depression, that's when you get the bad side effects.  Needless to say, he still smokes.

I have been taking Pentremine that my PCP gave me and it really, really helps me to not be hungry and I feel full after just a small amount.  I asked Dr. Walton about taking it and he said I could as long as I was off it a few days before surgery.

Thank you all for your input and experiences.  I took Zyban back in 2000 when I quit smoking.  I don't remember having any ill effects after stopping it, but I do seem to remember about the first week of taking it I felt edgy and irritable, but after that I ended up stopping smoking and have not started back.  I attribute some of that to the fact that I started a rigorous gym and personal training with a healthy diet, 8 years later though, I'm 100 pounds more than I was when I started.  :o(

So, since I told him I was hungry most of the time when dieting he gave me my choice as to use any of the three drugs he prescribes.  Oddly, I let him choose which one to try and he chose the one my insurance does cover.  So, I will try and see what happens.  I don't want to lose too much weight though for fear my insurance won't okay my surgery in April after finishing this supervised thing.

Thank you all so much :o)
