PROTEIN QUESTION
I have a realllly quick question...and I am not sure I am right. How many grams of protein does our new bodies absorb at one time? I am doing a protein drink in the morning with half banana and the protein in it is only like 29g. I am wanting to go up a few grams in that shake cuz I think it will definately give me good satiety and get my day going super well. 29 isnt bad, but a little more might be the sweet spot for the morning. Hope everyone is having a great day so far

Hi, LaDetra.
Since you're a RNY person, you need 100-140 grams of protein per day. Of course, you cannot get all of that in food, which is why you all do the protein drinks, at least some of the time. Depending on the length of your bypass, you absorb as little as 25% but, they say, not more than 50%. It is my understanding that every person's body cannot absorb more than 30-40 grams of protein at one sitting. With the absorption issue, and to be safe, eventually shoot for intake (throughout the day) of 1/2 your weight in protein (with a cap of 150 grams). This is information I learned through my group leader training. Remember, though, that what your doctor or nutritionist says is more important. Like everything, there's varying opinions on protein and malabsorption, bioavailability of protein, etc. Hope this helps and you're not more confused now. :)
Blessings,
Mary

LaDetra, you are doing great!! I ask that question of my surgeon at one of my follow-up appointments and was told not to worry about it. I had been reading on OH about how people were counting their grams of protein I had never been told to count it. He said as long as I was eating what I was suppose to that they preferred I got my protein from "real" food. That being said I know that a lot of other docs and nuts do push a certain number of protein grams and encourage the protein shakes.
I'm having an awesome day...at least it's not a Monday again!!!

LaDetra, are you counting the protein from the milk too?
I know the protein drink I use is 26 g of protein but with Braums milk it's 39 g's I don't know what is required for your surgery.....shoot I am not there yet, but I was just wondering what kind of protein shake you use that has 29. That's great!
My day is not going fast enough! Tomorrow is my day!

The information that Mary shared is pretty much it - I look at it this way - a RNY patient averages absorption of only about 1/2 of the protein we consume. Different foods have different absorption rates but if you average it out - that is pretty much it 50%!!! It bites and then bites somemore!
At WeightWise we aren't taught to become rabid about counting calories or protein - but we are informed of what and when to eat so that we become used to making the correct decisions. It has worked for most everyone so far, so apparently it is a good system! I am NOT saying that other practices are doing it wrong (please do not blast me!!) I am just saying that is the way we do it...period....
Yes there is a point where you max out what you can absorb - I think 30 grams is the top of that scale but could be a little more. Weird to think we push push push protein and darn it we don't get the entire lot of what we consume!!
This information is for RNY patients gang - I am not sure of the absorption rates on other surgeries.....I know it is posted here somewhere ...but....
