Sleeve Buddies - ? about sugary foods...

If I'm being totally honest - I will admit that a big part of my reason for choosing the Sleeve surgery over RNY was that I knew my addiction to carbs (sugary ones especially) was too strong.  The reasonable choice would have been to have RNY so I would be "punished" for eating too much sugar.  I wasn't ready to commit to giving those treats up forever.  (shameful)

Here is the kicker.....I had the Sleeve, but I still feel HORRIBLE when I eat something with too high sugar content.  I don't know what "dumping" feels like to RNY'ers, but what I feel is a wave of nausea/pain that makes me want to lay down and be left alone in my misery for about 30 minutes.  Has anyone else had this happen?  I'm not saying it's a totally bad thing.  It has certainly caused me to greatly decrease my sugar consumption.  Just surprised that it happens since I thought this was a RNY thing.  What causes this?  Am I the only freak out there feeling this way?

Also - it's hard to admit when I'm doing "the wrong thing".  Hopefully, there are some of you that can understand my moments of weakness, but it's still tough to be really honest when you know you aren't 100% following the plan prescribed to us by our doctors.

I picked the sleeve because not all RNY'ers dump and I couldn't be assured that I would dump.  I know that's kinda weird but I would've seen dumping as a positive since I also love sugar.  I have had only 1 dumping episode since I had surgery and it was a quick one and wasn't sugar.  I think that this will pass before long.  You're pretty newly post-op and I don't think most sleevers dump on sugar.

But I'm interested to see what other people say!

I have no idea what "dumping"is after WLS, I know you must be miserable! Maybe it is just the content of what you are eating that is not setting right with you...I do hope you get some answers so that you can feel better.
For me, on diabetic meds and after gall bladder surgery,  dumping syndrome was knowing where every bathroom in the city is.............or not leaving home after a meal.  I should weigh 100 lbs, because everything I ate went right through me....I fixed it later in life by taking 1 imodium and one non-drowsy antihistamine....It's a long story but my gastro doc is the one who helped me with that....and that worked! Finally!

I have a band, not s sleeve or RNY, and in theory bandsters don't dump.  But if I eat something really rich, like ice cream, a few bites and I'm having the same symptoms as described in a dumping episode.  My theory is because there is less volume in my stomach, and I'm no longer used to eating those foods, my body is just saying "NO".

I'm sure I could "work on it" and build up a tolerance, but I like it that that happens.  And once it happens a few times, you just naturally head for the sugar free stuff.

Dumping~ OH WOW!  Don't get me started on dumping hehe.  I could probably go on for hours at the foods in the last almost 5 years that have triggered it.  It's weird that one time I can eat something and be fine, but next time, UGH!  It's not so much like that now, but it was much worse in the first year-2 years out.  Ice cream, however, still is not my friend and probably never will be, as well as most sweets like cakes and pies, so I pretty much just avoid them at all costs (ESPECIALLY ice cream).  I did have the RNY, however, so I'm not gonna be of any help on the sleeve thing, just thought I'd share my lovely dumping experiences with you, hon.  *hugs* and I hope it gets better soon.  Just so you know, it WILL get better after the first year or so for sure!

Hi Teri!! Well, I have to say that I don't eat sugary carb foods, but I have noticed that just with bbq sauce and my favorite polynesian sauce from Chick-a-fila, my heart starts racing out of control, I get a sick sweat, and it is absolutely miserable!! One time about 3 weeks ago I tried a Bryers carb smart chocolate bar, because I just thought I had to have it. I ate half of it, and was sick for 30 minutes. So, I suppose that is pretty much dumping, so I've avoided high sugar sauces, and no sweets at all. I hope this helps, and you are not alone, I just won't go there anymore because it's not worth my heart racing rapidly. It gives me the feeling of not being in control.

Have a great rest the weekend,
Amber

I can't tolerate sweets too much - more than one bite and my stomach will let me know it does not like it!! I have never gotten sick from anything, but the tolerance for sweets has definitely changed - and to this day it is still the same (almost one year out).

You are not alone.  Read about my ice cream boo-boo last night.  Yucko!  Hopefully I will remember my lesson and not repeat that any time soon.
