For my Revision, I've decided to go with Dr. Lana Nelson, anybody else with BCBS Federal?

Hi folks,

If you have BCBS Federal, how long did it take to get approval?  This is for a revision.  What was required?  I have a BMI of 38 with co morbidities, type II diabetes, high blood pressure.

My lap band surgery I had last year in April just did not work out for me.   So, I'm going for a RNY.  Please share with me your experience and thoughts.  Thanks.

I just went to a seminar and someone asked the question of "what if I get band an it dosent work for me, when can I get the RNY or Sleeve?" and the doc said you have to wait 3 yrs to be sure it was given time to work. That is tri~care, but that kind of makes me wonder if most insurances make you wait that long. IDK..Good luck with getting the revision! I know dealing with ins companies can be a major pain in the booty.

I'm not sure about approval for revisions but my surgeons office will schedule you immediately if you have BCBC Federal because they are great about approving :)

I have BCBS Federal and they have new policies this year that the approval has to be done BEFORE the surgery now instead of basically after the fact in the past.  Before if you qualified for the surgery, they could perform the surgery then get it approved, now it is more difficult.  I am not sure what qualifications they require since the beginning of the year.

I use Dr Gornichec and love him, but one of the reasons they pushed mine through so quickly was the new changes BCBS federal was putting into effect.

Best of luck.

Dr Nelsons office is great about getting the approval for everything before and will lay everything out for your first. If you have questions call and ask for the insurance ladies, they will answer everything they can.

Hi Virginia,

When I had surgery in 2007, BCBS Federal would pre-certify but not pre-approve the surgery.  They covered my revision but it had been 25 years since my first surgery which was a VBG (vertical banded gastroplasty) also known as stomach stapling.  I had the same insurance with the first surgery.

Hope you get the go-ahead soon!

I have BCBS Federal.  First appointment in Sept.  Surgery 12/29.  I used Dr Gorospe in Tulsa, it went really quick.
