Recumbent bike?
Kim, I have had a recumbent bike for several years. I have bad back issues and I got it for that reason. I absolutely LOVE it! My hubby says it is like riding down the street in a recliner.
Not all recumbents are designed the same, so you need to try out several styles to find one that fits you. On mine, the legs are not straight out in front, but drop down some sorta like a regular bike. You actually sit up straight on mine and the handlebars are at a comfortable height. The wide seat and the supportive back are much like a comfy chair. Some recumbents are more tilted back so you are semi-reclining.
Unfortunately, the brand/style names have worn off, so I can't help you there but it was a special order from a local bike shop. There are only 2 drawbacks that I have found. You are lower than most bikes and may not be as readily visible by traffic. They sell these flags on a pole that you can attach to the back to be more eye level visible for drivers. The other drawback is that your distance visual field is smaller (since your are lower) than regular bike riders especially if you ride on hills. Both of these can be easily overcome. I wholeheartedly recommend the recumbent!!

Remember Shelly...harris2 I think was her screen name. Anyway she researched the heck out of this and bought a bike through www.day6bicycles.com and swears by them. They are actually semi-recumbent. I am seriously thinking of getting one for my birthday.
