Coughing after surgery

I have been home since Thursday. Since last night I have been coughing and coughing a lot. I called the hospotal and they told me that it wouldn't have anything to do with the surgery. I wonder if I am still trying to get out the C02/gas out of my body. Anyone have any coughing problems? Any suggestions on what to take for it?

Thanks!

You may very well be still trying to get rid of your C02, are you using your insentive sperometer? If you are not you need to, this will help prevent you from getting pnuemonia. I am 4 years out from my surgery.

Jennifer, I suspect that you may have the crud that is going around.  If you are running a fever or coughing up icky stuff you will need to see a doctor.  I am not sure what you can take since you are so soon post-op.  I am 8 months out and taking Mucinex DM for my cough right now.  I don't know if it comes in liquid form or not.  Good luck getting better soon.  Oh, use a pillow on your tummy when you cough to help with the pain and soreness.

I have maintained for one year at this point.  I am steady at -120 pounds.  =)

Jennifer, I'm telling you that I had a similar incident happen to me but I was still in the hospital and they wouldn't let me leave.  i had to use the thing that Rita administered all the time.  So if you still have it, use it to strengthen your muscles and get whatever this is out....who knows, it may even complicate healing if you don't  That thing that she uses is the only reason i got out when i did and they kept me for 4 nights....

It might be handy for you to PM Rita since she's a respiratory therapist and if she doesn't have the answer, then I'm sure that she can help.

Jennifer, I spoke with Dr. Broussard for you and he is suppossed to give you a call. Thomas is right about the Incentive Spirometer. You can't use that thing too much. Rita

If you have the crud, get a netti pot (I sound like a broken record) but it will keep the sinus stuff from draining down and causing problems with your new tummy.

I loved my Incentive Spirometer. We had to use it in front of the nurses at Norman regional and were encouraged to use it reg. Till we came back at 2 weeks.

I got a cold from the hospital. That was nasty. I coughed for 2 weeks! I thought I was going to die. The coughing did help get rid of the soreness though. And the huggy bear I was given saved my incisions.

I will continue to use that breathing thing they gave me in the hospital. Thanks for all the advice everyone!
