What is a stricture????
Yes, I have already put a call into Dr B.. Now, I am waiting for a return call..
Here are my symptons... Soft food goes down just fine, hard / full protein does not. It is very painful for full protein to go down (ex: salmon pattie, slice turkey) yes, I chew chew chew, very small tip of pinkey size, actually smaller. I chew until it disolves in my mouth. Very painful, each bite that goes down, feels like someone pushing my chest in or wringing it in circles. I drink all my water every day, water is no problem to get down.. If I accidentally take big gulps of water it hurts, but sipping does not..
Just now after eating lunch, I threw up.. First time, but now all my food is gone..
Still waiting for Dr B to call me back..
Thanks,
Sheila

teacher teacher I know the answer!!!!
a stricture is a build up of scar tissue.
and if you had one soft foods would not go down neither would water.
your tool might not be ready for the foods you are eatting....
big gulps of water can not be done till you are futher out..lol i dumped the first time i did that.
you might have to stay on soft foods awhile longer..I know I did

Sheila -
It is basically a "tightening" of the stoma that leads into the stomach pouch from your esophagus. It can be caused by scar tissue, swelling, etc. It can be pretty uncomfortable and make it difficult to get your nutrition in.
You have had a scope once already right? I had to have a total of 3 EGD's before I was finally able to get back on my eating schedule - started the issues about 3 weeks after surgery and had 3 EGD's over about a 2 month span. I had a stricture AND an ulcer - well - still have the ulcer we apparently are married and no one told me! (lol-not!)
Dr B is in clinic today I believe so they will definitely get back to you soon. I would try some warm (not hot) tea - peppermint always helps me - if anything it is soothing and the smell always relaxes me. They may back you up to soft foods again for a few days to see if things calm down - I try to go to soft foods anyway if I have had to vomit because it always tends to tear me up for a little while.
Hang in there, keep an open mind - sometimes we have to take 2 steps forward and 1 step back to get where we need to go.

Sher:
Any WLS patient can develop stricture - I know there seems to be more RNY patients but I believe I have also seen some sleeves develop them as well. I would think even a lap band patient could develop stricture as well.
Anything that could make that particular area scar or swell can cause a stricture - so even a throat or esophagael cancer patient could have the issue. I am sure my father suffered from this during his esophagael cancer but I just wasn't smart enough to know at the time - I didn't realize until years (and years) after his death that the surgery he had was basically a wls procedure that isn't even done anymore that removed a good portion of his stomach and 4-5 inches of his esophagus.
The thing that everyone needs to remember is to monitor your body and keep talking to your surgeon about what is happening. Strictures normally develop fairly early from what I have seen and experienced - 3-5 weeks out - but never is that 100% of the case.

Sheila,
You know I had a stricture, just had an endoscopy last Wednesday. They told me it was scar tissue built up where my stomach and intestines were re-connected. I did fine getting soft foods and water down, but it wouldln't go anywhere after I got it down. I was miserable. I had solid food today and it made me sick again. This is the first time I've been sick since the procedure. Ruth, your post has me worried! Three END in 2 months...not sure I can take it! LOL
Good luck Sheila. I hope you find out what is wrong, I am glad you didn't put it off like I did!
Hugs,
Marsha

That's it - it was Marsha Marsha Marsha not you Sheila! Sorry about that!!
Just a funny story - when I was in pre-op for my first EGD Dr. B walked in to check on me while Dr. W was prepping - he was so sweet but then he said - "I had a patient in LA that I had to do SIX of these on before we got her taken care of" - here I am going in for #1 and I have THIS point to think about? Gee Thanks Toby!! Anyway - after the fact he did tell me that she had also returned to smoking almost immediately after her WLS and that was causing part of her issues with healing and scarring. SOOOOO... What's my point? NADA!!
Dr B and Dr W have a great track record even with strictures and ulcers. Give them a chance and they can fix just about anything!! Or find someone who can!! Have I mentioned I love them both?? LOL
