Biggest Loser and the RNY dude

I haven't ever thrown up either, thank goodness.  I consider myself lucky in that regard.  But I never measure.  That was one of the things I always resented about Weigh****chers.  It was like, "Hey, you're fat!  So you gotta waste time measuring that!"  I know that's a bad attitude.  I really should measure I guess so I would know how many calories I'm actually eating.  It really freaked me out with that guy last night...

I am glad I missed it. I have never seen the biggest loser. I hate the thought of watching fat people torture themselves on national television.

I missed the show last night, but I do remember that one of the very first things Dr. Walton told me was that you CAN out-eat any of the WLS options.   As we all know, as miraculous as our changes are, the surgery is not a miracle, only a tool.  Sounds to me like this guy either never got the instructions on how to use the tool or just let his testosterone run away with him and refused to read and follow the directions.

I know that the long term programs offered by the practices in our area do a great job in making sure that none of us (even the men who won't read directions) fall into this trap.

Now that you've all made me curious, I'll have to go home and fire up my Tivo to record The Biggest Loser for this season...

Best wishes with all your losing!

Yea, I know we can out eat any of these surgeries.  But it seems physically impossible to eat up to that size again.  Guess this has to serve as a frightening reminder to all of us!

I know that my brother had WLS about 5 years ago.  He had no pre-op requirements, no cardiologist clearance, no psych clearance, no support groups and no nutritionist before or after surgery.  Needless to say he is struggling to keep it off...BIG TIME!  I have invited him to our group and OH but he hasn't joined in yet.  I think that was vital for me as well as the rest of us.  It's kind of like an alcholic....once one always one.  I suffer from obesity and will unless I choose to control it with the tools I have.  The only bad difference is I have to have food in my house and my work place but I wouldn't have to have alcohol around!!!  That's how I have to look at it.  It's simply in remission as long as I do my part.  I really think if I thought I'd gain this all back my DH would just have to take me on to Norman...if y ou know what I mean!!!

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

Which dude are you talking about? I saw most of the show, but I must have missed that part.

It was the guy that was in the show with his son who was like 19 or something.  He had a kind of strange looking belly and lots of hair.  Sorry!  But that's what he looked like!

I don't want to sound bad here, but it doesn't matter whether you have the DS, the RNY, the VSG, or the lapband/realize band, all the surgeries could fail if they aren't followed up correctly (meaning if the patient doesn't comply, doesn't have support, follow up care, etc).  He is not the first person on the Biggest Loser with a failed WLS.  He is either the 2nd or the 3rd one, he's just by far the biggest one.  I don't think he did it just by eating slider foods all day because our stomas do stretch out to an extent after we've gotten so far out from surgery, but I know he had to be eating a lot of stuff he wasn't supposed to and that probably did include plenty of slider foods.  This has been a pretty hot topic on a lot of the boards since last night, but this is the first time I've actually responded to a topic on it.  I know too many people who have regained after surgery~ That is why I love the support so much from these boards and my own support group.  It really helps to keep me on track.  I think we can maintain if we have each other to lean on.  After almost 5 years and even 2 kiddos, I'm staying within my own personal goal range and it's not been an easy feat.  I love my carbs and I admit it~ Having to add them back for my both my pregnancies hardcore and then break that habit again afterwards is not an easy thing.  These boards and all of you have really been a godsend because I read how well everyone is doing and it motivates me to stay on track (as best as I can because, naturally, I do have occasional slip-ups).  Thank you all for being there and thanks for reading my novel.

Okay I posted this on the other thread about Biggest looser but I wanted to post it here too since it's more relavant here...

I wondered about the wls guy too. Also wouldn't he have a hugely unfair advantage even at +5 years out? He's still got an egg sized pouch as evident from MRI and he dosn't absorb the fat or calories the same as the rest of the contestants. He lost like 35 lbs in week one alone...more than anyone else in the history of the show. Dosn't that just go to show you that WLS does work if you change your lifestyle? on the show he has to eat right and exersize, I'm intrested in seeing how he progresses on the show.

I thought the exact same thing.  It seems to me that he would have an unfair advantage over everyone else.  But someone else posted that this wasn't the first person on BL to have had wls.  Anyway, seems like the other contestants would be unhappy about this but I've never heard anything about it.
