Give me some ideas of exactly what to take...

Sherry,

I wore pajamas with 3/4 length sleeves.  You will have the IV for time you are there and mine was in my forearm.

As for chapstick....they won't let you use it at Weight Wise.  I learned something new while I was there.  I asked for my sister to get mine from my purse, the nurse happened to be in there at that time and she said no because of the petroleum in it and oxygen.  This was new information to me, but some I'm glad to know.

When my Grandma was dying, I started to put carmex on her lips and of all things they told me no she couldn't have it....I mean at that point, what difference did it make. She was only hours away from her trip to heaven.....
So I remembed  that but you can use it after the surgery, I'm sure.
Anyway, when the nurse left Grandma's room, I put grandma's bright red lipstick on her. She never went anywhere without her lipstick...and I mean no one saw her without it....She stepped into heaven with bright red lipstick on! I laugh about that often....only her rebel grand daughter would ignore a nurse and put it on her....That is why she lived with me!! If it were going to harm her, I would not have done it.

Hi, Sherry.
If you need to be on oxygen (and I was), after the surgery, you won't be allowed to use a petroleum-based lip gloss/carmex, etc., because of the risk of explosion. Lipstick could be a better choice, but check the ingredients. :)
Blessings,
Mary

Hey Girl,

Bring panties, a sportbra, comfortable pj's, a laptop, a pillow, your favorite fluffy toy, and your own broth cubes unless you think you want their version of broth.  After I left the hospital smelling broth was terrible and made me feel sick.  Make sure you buy all of your little flavor packets before you go to the hospital so you can have them waiting on you when you get home.  Most hospitals have WiFi, so that way you can keep in touch with work or the forum people to give us the updates oh how you are doing.  Do you know what you are having for your last supper?

This was my list (I probably took too much, but we live 2 hrs. away, and I knew I wouldn't be able to call home to say, "Would you bring my....?"--I used everything at least once)

Bible (won't leave w/o it)
pillow (because it's familiar, and I'll need it for the ride home, to sleep/cushion in case of bumpy roads)
brush, hair clips (to put my hair up, if I want to)
ipod with relaxing music + relaxation exercises + Psalms for Surgery, w/ ear phones
glasses (can't read w/o them)
Crest Brush-ups (for when I just need to rub my teeth, to feel fresh)
T-brush & t'paste
Biotene Mouthwash (I can't stand a dry mouth!)
Face wash, deodorant, basic make-up (I'll feel yucky, otherwise)
Alcohol swabs, in case I feel nauseous (smell one, and the nausea goes away--at least for me)
Pampers wipes, to freshen up
chap stick (only if you're not on oxygen)
robe, gown, slippers (in case I decide to feel prettier than the hospital gown will make me feel)
comfy outfit to go home in (plan to wear it there, as well)--leavin' bra at home!
phone card (I don't have a cell phone)
pen & paper (I'm a List Queen)
wallet, in case I want/need to shop at the Wt. Wise Store upstairs
CPAP machine (no machine, no surgery)
Most important of all, a positive attitude and a smile

Have a blessed surgery!
Mary

A big huge THANK YOU for sharing your list of items you took to the hospital. I appreciate all the imput as I have never had any type of surgery...

You all are amazing and incredible wealth of knowledge for us almost benchers...

Sarah, I haven't thought about my last meal... I am so scared about not weighing in under that I am trying to get that weight off!  Any good suggestions?

My surgery was on a Wednesday morning and I had my last meal at noon on Monday.  I was nervous about gaining, but I weighed in at 5 pounds less.
I know you cannot use any chap-stick type lip balms.  They will have oxygen going in your nose while you're in the hospital.  They will probably give a little packet of KY Jelly to use.  I know that I was amused by that when I was coming out of the anesthesia.
I bought some of the cute slipper socks with rubber pads on the bottom.  They look like little mary janes.  They were much better than the socks provided.
Good luck on your surgery!

OK, this is going to sound crude, but here goes...wet wipes.  When I was in the hospital, they would only allow me to sponge bathe, and let's face it, a lil bit of soap and water doesn't cut it after you have been tossed around by a hospital thermostat..too cold, too hot, sweltering, bake at 400 for 2 hours..ya know?  God forbid there is a chilled roomie with ya, yikes.  Also, ummmm, some folks (like my said chilled roomate) had an "unfortunate" excelerated rear expulsion of sorts after surgery.  All I could think of was the inadequacy of toilet paper during times of a dire emergency...ya know???

Yeah...baby wipes are a good thing (said in my best Martha Stewart voice) (unscented, don't wanna chafe...)...oh, and make sure someone has a list of phone numbers of everyone you want called and notified you are on the loser's bench!!
