I'm 3 weeks out and need help!!! I haven't taken my vitamins in 4 days. I have the bariatric advantage vitamins (Vitaband) from Weight Wise. (watermelon) These are so vitaminy, that I choke, want to throw up, and makes my tummy turn at just the thought of them. I liked these before surgery and they were ok the 1st week, but boy has that changed.

I believe I'm suppose to be taking 2 chewable mutli a day, Prilosec, calcium 3 times a day (what kind I know theres something special for women), iron, and b12 once a week??? Am I correct?? Please help, I'm so weak and not feeling good, and hoping that I can make it to GNC today. I'm finding out how important my vitamins are. I don't have time to order any vitamins online, so please tell me anything you've used from GNC or Walmart!!

I've been playing phone tag with my dietician for a week, because I missed my 2 week appointment due to weather. Thank you for your time, and any suggestions would be greatly apprieciated!!

I know a lot of VSG people take flinstones complete kids chewables.. maybe they will work for you?  I personally take gummi vitamins- I know they have a tiny bit of sugar but its worth it to me.  If you are feeling tired all the time make sure you are getting all your fluids in too.  Hope you feel better soon!

You are supposed to be taking a multiple vitamin twice a day and calcium 3 times a day.  I don't have that monthly visitor any  more so I don't have to take iron but I think that's once a day.  And you take B12 once a week and its subligual. (under the tongue)

I took the Flintstone's with iron chewable for awhile and was told that they weren't really good enough and I switched to Centrum chewables.  (don't like them!)  The calcium was harder for me and I ended up taking Citracal petites which are just a pill so I was a lawbreaker there so I can't recommend that to anyone.  The B12 is the easiest of all and it tastes good.  I take it every Saturday cuz that's easy for me to remember.

The vitamins are important so do the best you can.  I admit that I don't always get that second round of vitamins in but I wouldn't recommend that!  Be a better patient than me!

Hi, Amber.
With respect to the other post reply person, please don't take Flinstones chewables or gummi vites. They do not serve the bariatric patient well, at all. VSGers may not need to be as vitamin conscious as the RNYer, because we don't have the malabsorption issues, but it's still important that we feed our body what it needs.
This is what I take: Celebrate Vitamins' Calcium Plus Chewables (2 twice daily; I usually alternate the Hot Cocoa and the Strawberry Creme flavors), their Multivitamin (1 twice daily; Mandarin Orange flavor), and their Iron+C (once a day; tastes like a sweet tart). I take one B12 once a week (sublingual--under the tongue--from WalMart). You can check out www.celebratevitamins.com. They're a good price, and they give fast service. Like you, I take Prilosec.
Do not take your Calcium within 2 hours (either side) of your Iron, or it won't do any good. As long as you take a bariatric vitamin, you'll know you're getting the right kind of Calcium.
If you're going to GNC, ask for bariatric vitamin samples, to see/try what they have. I'm sold on Celebrate Vitamins, so I will order those for at least the first 6 months, and then will switch to their pill form supplements.
Even though I like the taste of all my vitamins and supplements, there are days when it's a chore to chew them up. I have to get stern with myself.
Blessings,
Mary

I'm sure you may know this, but on the Prilosec, be sure and take it 30 min before a meal or two hours after for it to work right....Same with other meds.... two hours after you have taken the other meds. I used to be a digestive research patient at a Doctors research clinic here and that is what he said of all those types of reflux meds. He is one of the best Gastro doc in OKC.

Thank you, Mary! I'm not going to waste my time running here and there looking for vitamins, I'm going to order some of the kind you have. Thanks again!!   When do you take your iron, wondering if evening would be best for me.

Hugs

Hi, Amber.
I think you'll be pleased with the Celebrate Vitamins. The only thing I found cheaper than at Celebrate Vitamins is the B12, which I bought at WalMart.
I usually take the Iron+C with my lunch, but I understand that many take it at bedtime. I do try to space out all the pills 2 hours apart, at least, just to make sure one doesn't interact with another one.
If you order at celebratevitamins.com during the month of December, you'll have a chance to win a year's worth of vitamins. (Not trying to make a sale, here, but just to let you know). It sure would be cool to win that. There are some other smaller prizes, too. Good luck!
Be sure to check in with your dietician on all your meds, but I know that Chris gave me the "all clear." I know that your bloodwork helps her make the determination.
Blessings,
Mary

I use the chewable vitamin from CVS.  It's "comparable" to the Centrums, but I didn't like the flavor of centrum.  I take calcium pills three times a day, I don't have to take iron, because the vitamin has enough in it, and I take b12 once a day.  I, too,had trouble with fatigue and my NUT told me to take b12 daily.  She said you cannot overdose on it and it would help with the energy.  BE SURE AND TALK TO HER BEFORE YOU CHANGE THE AMOUNTS OF ANYTHING, but you might try the spectravites at CVS as your multivitamin.  Not so bad tasting.  And, keep up the water.  Fatigue is a sign of dehydration.  Lynette

HI Amber.....I am having the same issues with vitamins. You can take Centrum chewables and Walgreens has a comparable chewable...which is ok...orangeish...but better than the vitaband in my opinion.  My biggest  problem is the calcium citrate lozenges I am supposed to take three times a day.  Just opening the bottle makes me gag and I can NOT get it down. It swells up in my mouth and I want to puke.  There is a calcium citrate powder that can be added to water....but somehow I think that will suck too. The calcium citrate is sold at Weight Wise but I haven't seen it anywhere else, but I am going to have to find another way to get it in. I got cinnamon flavored lozenges ....a flavor I used to like....but not any more. Even the smell of a cinnamon candle makes me feel sick.
Just checked the info I had on file from Weight Wise and it says 2 multivitamins a day that include iron, 3 calcium citrate a day...yuk, to be taken separately from the other vitamins, and
B-12 once a week.
I have lost 18.5 pounds at four weeks out. I was expecting more. How are you doing on that?
Are you on soft protein....i.e. eggs, tuna etc?
I get to add veggies tomorrow and I talked to a lady that said she has only lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks since adding veggies and that scares the crap out of me.  Good luck. Let me know how you do.
