" One of my favorite photos of one of my favorite dogs is Dottie sitting in her Santa Suit looking completely PO'd.  She loved props like flowers, etc, but the four boots was just too much for even that great diva. "

Haaaaah!!!  That's just too funny!  One of my JRT's is a prima donna and we just saw a doggie dress, red of course, that had a string of pearls attached.  My husband almost bought if for her, but I reminded him that she already has the Swarovski crystal necklace/collar for the lovely litter she had.  They paid my way to US Nationals in Albuquerque, NM one year, plus the money from the sales of those pups bought a whole bunch of new winter blankets that winter.  Anyway, he decided that the fake pearls were just not up to our little girl's standards and put the dress away....I HOWLED over that one.

Just let me know when you'd like to visit, I'd love to have you come up.  We're an Arabian Discovery Farm, which means that we've promised to present our breed in a positive light and to refrain from any sales pitches on a Discovery visit.  Like I ever sell any of mine anyhow...

And Merry Christmas before I forget when things get really silly around here!

Hello!

I'll be 3 weeks out tomorrow, and had the sleeve. I could not be happier with my decision. But, I can say that the 1st week was really really hard. I couldn'****ch TV for all the food comercials, couldn't be around when my husband was cooking for him and the kids. You just have to make the decision and be 100% dedicated to getting healthy, and keep a positive attitude. There's days that are hard, and some that are a breeze. Have you considered the sleeve. I was set on having the lapband, until I went to a seminar, and new that I was wrong, that the sleeve was for me.

If you have any other questions feel free to Personal Message me, I will help you with any questions I can answer.

Good Luck,
Amber

Hi Amber,
I haven't considered the sleeve because my insurance won't cover that.  However, I am interested in everyone's pro's and con's with whatever procedure they decided on and their thought process that brought them to their decision.

Thank you so much for sharing with me how you felt and your positive attitude.   Reading about some of the crazy mood swings and depressive episodes associated with some of the surgeries is a little scary for me, so I'm weighing everything very carefully.

Welcome to OH and your decision to have WLS. I am 1 year out and I would do it again in a heart beat. Do I miss my comfort foods? You bet I do, however the trade off has been so worth it. I still have bad days. The best advice I can give to you is to take one day at a time. There are some days I have to take it one second at a time. As far as chosing which surgery to have, you have to make that choice and pick the best one that fits your needs. After you attend the seminar it should be more clear to you.. Whichever surgery you choose just be sure and do your research and learn all you can about your new life changing process. Working at the hospital I see alot of people who come into this with blinders on and they haven't done their research. It is very important to know what is expected of you to be successful. Best of luck and if I can help you in any way, don't hesitate to ask. Merry Christmas, Rita

The "no carbonation" thing makes a ton of sense to me now.....not when I heard it!! With the RNY just imagine the bubbles in that tiny stomach! It would hurt like gas in it....I have left Diet CherryVanilla Dr. Pepper off my menu for 3 months now and at times, I sure miss that and Fresca. I drink alot of the Walmart brand Crystal Lite drinks....They are quite good. My most treasured drink is anything in Sonic's wonderful Ice!! The thing about caffine is that it often acts like sugar in our bodies so that is why that is out. Don't quote me on this, but I think that later on after the surgery you can reintroduce coffee's back in to the diet, but limited amounts.
I am so happy that you are going to a Seminar. That will help you make up your mind.

My diabetes is my main issue along with the weight. I want to get this weight off and not have it return to hald this darn disease now!! I also have 3 stents in my heart. I have many co-morbidities so I needed to do this or I would not make it much longer. I just told my son about the surgery in Jan today and he says  Do you realize how dangerous it is?? I told him that having my diabetes out of control, no matter how many carbs I take out of my diet is dangerous too! I just have to take these steps to feel better and to help save my life!

Growing up, I had a wonderful horse. He was my best friend in the world and knew all my deepest thoughts in life....I was a rodeo Queen and enjoyed the trail rides that the local Rodeo Club had. I would come home from school, hop on my horse and go into town to drag main and to get a drink at the local Dairy Boy!  Saddle or no saddle I was off on that horse!  It was the best time of my life...I do want to ride again. I could ride now, but think I'd have to mount near a fence!! I don't know if I could pull myself up. I actually only have about 45 to 55 lbs to lose now, but that is still a huge bag of dog food to pull up along with the rest of my weight! It has been about 15 years since I have ridden, but that is for sure on my bucket list!!
I used to ride in all kinds of weather. It was my therapy!  I can see how you would want to be fit before summer to enjoy more time with your horses....How many do you have?

Tomorrow I am taking care of 5 of my 11 grandkids so I am off to bed....I am so glad you joined the group here...You are going to be so glad you did.

I wondered if the carbonation thing was because it would feel like or make you gassy.  I can totally understand not having that then.  I'll just have to switch to decaf tea, can't handle Crystal Light at all, runs right through me.

I have Type II diabetes, GERD, High BP and of course, joint pain from the weight.  I can still get up on a horse, I just use a picnic table or ditch or something along those lines.  I think if I thought I could not ride, I wouldn't have made it this far.

I now have 12 horses and one foal due in June.  1 QH, 2 NSH, 2 1/2 Arab pintos and 7 pure bred Arabians.....I thought it was 9, but counting on my fingers it's gotta be 7.  LOL, I'm at the point where 1 more won't make a difference workload wise.

As I said to Deb, if you'd like to come up and visit the horses, I love to show them off and meet new horsey people!!  And the fact that we're all trying to get healthy and light just makes it nicer.

Good night, I'm going to hit the bed too, the horses get mad if breakfast is late.  They say the room service is really lacking if their meals aren't on time.   From your avatar I'd never have guessed you had grandkids and 11 to boot.....yikes!!!  That's a lot of little un's to have underfoot!

Merry Christmas,
Pat

Welcome Pat!  I have made a lot of really wonderful friends though our board and support group.  They are all so helpful and full of good information and personal advice and experiences.  I didn't make my decision until a couple of weeks before my surgery.  My insurance totally excluded any weight loss surgery so I had to be self pay.  I had already ruled out the lap band for me personally so I was trying to decide between the sleeve and RNY.  I finally made my decision together with Dr. Walton what was best for me personally.  I have a thing for sweets and for me I didn't want to ever be able to go back to them.  I also am a type II diabetic and was taking about 140 units of insulin per day to try to control it...didn't do a good job at that.  I have been so pleased with my decision of having RNY.  I have NOT had an insulin injection since March 12, 2008...the day of my surgery.  My last 3 A1C's have been 5.9; 5.6 and the one a few weeks ago was 5.1!!!  I have had many of my co-mobidities resolved and would so do it all again in a heart beat.  I actually feel like I am living life again and not jus****ching it go by.  I'm sure after your seminar and informational meeting as well as a meeting with one of the surgeons you will know what is going to be best for you.

I can also say that I was only off work one week.  I seemed to have all my energy back within 6-8 weeks and back up to full speed.  My energy level has far surpassed what I was pre-op...no comparison!!  Good luck on your journey and your decision for a life change!!!

Debbie

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

Debbie,
Thanks for all your info.  Like you, I have a thing for carbs.  Not so much sweets, but breads in just about any shape, texture or form.  Not that I would sniff at a sweet with my name on it mind you....

I'm scheduled for the intial presentation on Jan 13 and Integris Baptist in OKC.  I'm really looking forward to gathering the info.  From everything I'm hearin on this board about what reallly seems to work on the co-morbidities, I'm leaning toward the RNY procedure at this point.  I was in the lap band corner until coming to this board.  I'm a Type II diabetic as well, but don't take insulin.  Just oral meds that I'm not crazy about.  Metformin killed my gut, then came Avandia but with my family history of severe heart issues, I was taken off that and put on Actos.  I seem to feel very fatigued on Actos, not liking that as a solution much.   Rahter lose the weight and have the Type II disappear.  I hope!!!!  Same for the BP & Tryglycerides.

It's excellent to hear that you could go back to work after 1 week.  I wasn't looking forward to having to hire someone to look after my horses for 6-8 weeks, I'm so picky I'd doubt they'd be able to do things the way I want them done.  Not fair of course, but I know me.

Thanks again for your response.

Woa-you won't be working with horses after a week-there is a weight lifting limit for a month _can't remember but it's like 5 or 10 pounds.  You'll be able to walk out and supervise, but no lifting.

LOL Deb, so much for my wishful thinking then, eh?  Ah well, good news is, Stillwater is full of college kids who are always needing to make a buck or two.  I'm sure I can find a couple of vet students who need money to come pick out and feed for me.

Since I have so many horses, I really don't like to ask my horse friends to help out, they have 2  or 3 and think that's a lot of work.  So it's a pretty big imposition on a friend.   I was just hoping not to have to train anyone, for just 6 weeks or so, you know?  That falls into the category of being easier to do it all yourself sometimes.  But if they restrict me to 5 or 10 lbs lifting, I don't want a repeat of my gallbladder incisions incident, so I'll listen.  These rubber horse buckets probably weigh almost 5 lbs before I put any food in 'em.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!  May the Light of Christ's blessings illuminate your life forever.
