Hi,
Dr. Gornichec in Oklahoma Ctiy will be performing my RNY on New Years' Eve.  How soon after lap RNY do they allow you to start working out (gym, Tan & Tone, Curves, etc...)?  I want to join but I don't want to pay for a month or two that I may not be attending.  That is why I am leaning towards Tan & Tone...no contract.
Thanks for all your input!!

I had my appt yesterday with my exercisist and she suggested within 1 week I get back into the gym after surgery.  I know Dr Broussard wants his patients up and walking within the hour.. Of course, she suggested I only do what is comfortable if I feel my suthers pulling than pull it back.  But standard walking is a go within a hour after surgery.

Good luck,
Sheila

Is that true?  An hour after surgery???  Wow, that is quick!  I thought I'd at least get a nap in!  An hour I'll just be sleepin good!  LOL!

I was at Tan & Tone within 2 weeks after my RNY in 2006 - it kept me moving and you can increase your intensity with which you resist as you get further out.  The initial was basically letting the machines move me for a little while and then I started the resistance.  It is normally whatever you feel comfortable with as long as you are not stressing your little incisions.

Standard protocol at WW is up and moving as soon as possible after surgery - normally within 2-3 hours - definitely within 4 hours you will be required to be up - there is NO REST FOR THE WICKED there!  (wink)  You can drive as soon as you are off your pain meds and have no discomfort doing so.

I am sure this is pretty standard but be sure to check with your surgeon to make sure of the "official" protocol he expects.  Dr. Gornichec runs a pretty tight program and I know it is probably somewhere in your patient information binder too.

Good Luck and welcome to the bench!!

Thanks for the info!!
Ruth, I am glad to hear of someone else who did Tan and Tone....I have done it in the past, and I have done Curves (loved Curves, but you have to sign a contract with them).
Wish I had the binder that everyone else has.......they never gave me one!!
I have had 2 c-sections, and while I am sure this will be alot different, I tolerated getting up and around after those pretty well.....of course I was 10 years younger since my last one!!

I also joined Tan & Tone two weeks after surgery - was a great exercise to start with. Unfortunately you have to sign a contract there too. Presently I do mostly cardio and lost interest in Tan & Tone somewhat, but I still go once in a while. I started walking a couple of hours after surgery and haven't stopped since!!!

Dr. Walton's response when I asked him the same question was that I could do anything I could tolerate, and that the only way I could harm the surgery was to eat.
