Hair Loss - The Famous Question

We have a lot of newbys on our boards and some that are pre-surgery.  I found this article on the main board today and it was a very good post.  Mine started about 4 months out and guess what...I didn't go bald and it stopped falling out and is coming back in.  I was quite concerned during it all and I thought to myself...at least when I was larger I had good hair!!!  It was just a minor set-back.  I think you can take biotin, use Nioxin and rub potions and do voodo and it's still going to fall out and get dry!!!  I did use biotin and it still fell out!!  I ate lots of protein...it still fell out!  I used Nioxin and it still fell out!!!  I copied and pasted the article below:

It's gonna happen and-- it's gonna stop.  The good news is that it's making room for the healthy hair to come in .  Anything you take today will help for healthy new growth to replace it.

About hair loss

Telogen Effluvium is characterized by sudden, diffuse hair loss caused by an interruption in the normal hair growth cycle. This interruption is often the result of trauma, such as chemotherapy, childbirth, puberty, crash diets, major surgery, severe stress, and severe chronic illness. This trauma causes large numbers of hair follicles to enter a stage of telogen, or rest, simultaneously. After roughly 3 months of the telogen cycle the follicles will enter the anagen cycle, a stage of growth. The old hair will be forced out of the follicle by a new hair that is formed beneath it. This will cause a period of diffuse hair shedding. This condition is usually self correcting and can affect people of all ages

Thanks Debbie! This was a great article!
Now....let us hear from those who have lost their hair and have it back....
Ok does it really get that thin?? I mean where people notice?? Once it starts coming back in, does it still take along time to feel better about it?  Is the new hair still dry and brittle or is it somewhat normal? I have really oily hair, so I wondered if that will just change to dry or will it get really dry?

If I were rich I think I would check into extentions or something if it got real bad....Hair loss, is a fear in me as my hair is somewhat long....As long as I know it will come back....I can cope!!!

Again, Thanks Debbie

I started losing hair at about 3 months out and it has now slowed down to what is probably just normal hair loss now at 6 months.  There were days I really worried about it.  I don't think anyone else ever noticed but it was hard to me to ignore when there was blonde hair everywhere when I was getting ready to work in the morning.  I started taking Biotin 5,000 mcg after surgery (should have started before, I think) as it is supposed to make your hair grow faster.  I also use the Nioxin shampoo and conditioner.  I felt like I had to do something because if I hadn't, I would've always wondered if I could've stopped it!

My hair never changed and got dry or brittle and I wash every day so I think that is really individual.

I've never seen a bald woman at support group so have faith!

Hoping to see you the next 2 nights!  (I'll be there with my camera!  HA!!!!!!)

I got mine at Ulta but I've seen it a few places.  I could've gotten at the hair place I used to go to in Edmond but it was pretty pricey there.  And it's kind of confusing because they have lots of "formulas".  I bought the # 3.

I have thin, fine hair to begin with.  My hair started falling out right away.  I think the agressive diet was too much for my body! LOL!  My hair is coming out bad right now and yes people can tell.  I do see short new hairs so I am hoping and praying this ends soon.  But as we all say, we would rather be skinny and have bad hair.  The hair does grow back.  Right now mine looks very thin and is very dry.  I take biotin and use Nioxin too.

Sherry, I had naturally curly hair before WLS....no longer as of today.  It is as straight as a board.  It is getting thicker and I don't see so much scalp these days so I know it's getting there.  You'll be fine...it's just hair!!  I have always kept my hair pretty short but it's been really really short for a while now because of the hair loss.  It is very layered so that helps make it look thicker too.  I'm thinking that I'll start letting it grow some pretty soon.  My hair is still very very dry (but was always somewhat dry...but not like hay!!) so it's been extra dry and I condition the heck out of it every day.  I do wa**** every day so I'm sure it'd help if I went a day in between but I just can't do it!!  I see short hairs all through my head and my hair dresser says it is coming back and looks so much better.  It's just a temporary set back.....a good trade off in my opinion though.

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

I'm going to ask God if he can give me natural curly hair this time!! My hair is straight and fine!! I mean if I can dream of prince charmings and stuff like that....I can dream for natural curly hair!! Right?? The girl who always did my hair wouldn't let me do perms on my hair because it made it too brittle!! I wonder what she would tell me after I have this surgery!!!!

Thanks for the info!!! That is something I truly think about, I like my long hair... BUT when I loose all the weight maybe one of those short sexy cuts will look good because!

Thanks for looking out for all of us pre-surgeriers!
