Is the hair breaking off or coming out at the root?

Sorry for yet another hair loss question but this is really puzzling me.  I can see short little hairs around the edge of my forehead where I have been hoping that it is new growth.  But then the thought occurred to me that it might actually be that my hair is breaking off and not coming out at the root.

My hair has been coming out since before I had my surgery because I had a knee surgery and was on the agressive diet for a few months.

Does anyone know how it works?  Does it break off, come out at the root, or both?

Most likely the little hairs are regrowth. I just had my hair cut shorter and in more layers to help with the hair loss on Friday. The hairdresser told me this is what happens and that the Nioxin shampoo that I started using helps to seal the follicles. She said I could have started it sooner as it takes several weeks to work but that I should start seeing little hairs appear within the next couple of weeks.

Hey Nancy!  I think I might need a new cut too.  I think I need it cut shorter and layered up a bit more. I'm glad it sounds like I am having regrowth!  Yea!

I say that the hair is falling out from the root and smaller hairs you find are re-growth.  Congrats to you on making it to the re-growth stage!!!

I'm 3 months out and at the rate I'm losing hair, I will be bald by Christmas.  I have fine, thin hair to begin with and it is crazy how much hair I'm losing every day.  I'm just trying not to dwell on it.....

You and me both girl!  I have been losing so much that our shower has gotten clogged three times and we have had to use liquid drain stuff on it!!!   I also have fine thin hair to begin with so this is very alarming but...I would not trade this weight loss for anything!  Even if I had to get a wig I would still not trade it!

Whoopsie..that last post was really from me and not my sister! LOL! 

It should be regrowth.  Are you using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner?  It might help.

Hey Denise, yes I am using Nioxin.  In fact, you were the one that told me about it and I went out right away and got it.  I have almost used the whole bottle and need to get some more.  So hopefully it did its thing and what I am seeing is actually new growth! Woo-hoo!
