Nervous about being pregnant after surgery
Hey everyone. Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving holiday and got the opportunity to be surrounded with the people you love. I do have a question for anyone out there. Has anyone been pregnant after surgery OR know someone that has? Can you tell me how that affected you and your diet? I do not have children and would love to one day, but I don't want to put the baby or myself at risk of not having enough :) I have talked to Dr. B and he assured me that he would assist me with diet when that day comes, but I would really like to hear from someone that has gone down this path. Much love to you all. Have a great night! OH and go pokes! :)
I'm WAY past childbearing days, but I just wanted to say that I wish you well, when you do get pregnant. I'm sure Dr. Broussard will help you get the proper nutrition for you and the baby. I also wanted to tell you, in case you didn't know, that there is a forum here for WLS mommies and mommies-to-be. You might check it out, as there will be many there who can respond to your inquiry.
Blessings,
Mary

I have 2 friends that have had babies post op and both did fine. they had healthy babies. One of my friends gained 42 pounds, and she took it off with in 3 weeks time. She did really well. Now, my other friend gained 80 pounds and she was never able to get it off. so, I think it just depends on how well you control your eating just like it would be for a person who hasn't had the surgery.

My sister had Open RNY January 22, 2003. She had PCOS and irregular periods for years. She had also been trying to become pregnant for a couple of years prior to her surgery with no success. When she had her surgery, she immediately had a period (which I guess it is common for surgery to bring on a period). Then, I think she said she had another period the next month and that was the last period she had. She didn't think anything of it though since she had been irregular for years anyway... But, then I guess something made her start to wonder so she bought a pregnancy test in April and found out she was pregnant!! Yeah, her doctor told her to wait at least 12 months after surgery before even thinking about getting pregnant, but she had no idea it would happen so easily or so soon after surgery! Her son was born December 26, 2003, 11 months post-op. This pregnancy was her second pregnancy. She gained a LOT of weight with her first and actually LOST during her second pregnancy (of course, this was her surgery honeymoon phase anyway)... Her post WLS son weighed less than her first (understandable since she was losing through the entire pregnancy) but he was still over 6 lbs which is a normal weight. He was born completely healthy and still is. He will be 5 years old this December.
My recommendation, WAIT until 18 to 24 months post surgery to get pregnant, eat as healthy as you can, don't miss a single vitamin, keep in close contact with Dr. B and with your OB. Be completely honest with your OB that you had WLS and you might even discuss your WLS and the idea of getting pregnant with your OB BEFORE you start trying because he or she might recommend taking some extra vitamins prior to pregnancy to get you ready for the big event.
There are a lot of people who have had successful pregnancies post WLS so don't worry. Just take good care of yourself and follow the doctors orders :o)
Hope this helps,

I just read your post and one of the WLS newsletters I get online has an article this month about pregnancy after WLS. This might be helpful for you.
