Your concern about the mortality rate is understandable, but don't forget what economists call the "opportunity costs."  The cost of doing nothing and passing the opportunity by are far greater and are far more likely.  You will almost certainly live a shorter life without the surgery.  You will almost certainly live a less rewarding life without the surgery.  You will likely not be able to do things you otherwise could do; I'm talking about the WOW moments like fastening the buckle on an airplane seat belt and actually having to tighten it, or being able to climb a mountain and watch the sunset (both of which I did this week!).  It's worth it.  You'll know which approach is right for you and which is appropriate to your lifestyle. Best wishes.

Earl,
Thanks for sharing your WOW moments! They aren't just mini Wow moments that is great!  Mountain Climbing!  How fun!  That sounds like a moment I would like to have!

First , I apologize for not responding sooner , i have been having issues posting here , but i have been able to read and keep up with everyone ,  I am a patient of Dr. Gornichec , and i trust him with my life , he certainly has not lost any patients , he was giving you a statistic , as someone else has said.  I have had the lapband and have been very pleased , although you do lose the weight slower than with RNY , i dont feel you have any less results , but what you need to understand is this is a very personal decision and whatever choice you  make will be the right one for you .  The lapband gets a bad rep here sometimes and i feel like i have to respond , i personally dont know why anyone would have a fill every month but thats just me . As with any other weight loss surgery the result is up to how hard you want to work , there are people i know that have lost over 100 lbs with lapband .  I just feel that all the surgeries are good and it is dependent on how hard you want to work and how committed you are .  Anyway thats my 2 cents.  Good luck and trust Dr Gornichec , he is wonderful .

Luanne,
Thanks for your response!  I wanted everyones opinion!  Thanks for giving it.  Especially Dr. G.'s patient.  I am very comfortable with Dr. G.  I think he is a very good dr.  He has a wonderful reputation.  I just got a little scared when he started talking the numbers.  But I know that's his job and I have all the respect in the world for him for that.  I don't feel I was trying to be sold something.  He was honest and up front.
I am glad you have had such a great sucess with your band.  I hope my sucess will be as well.  I agree with you that its all in how hard I work for it.  I have already started working on my eliptical so I will build some stamina to walk after surgery!
Thank you for responding, better late then never! LOL!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Kim
