My Consult yesterday Lap Band vs RNY
I think at Dr Gorospe's seminar he said his mortality rate was .002%.....He has done nearly 4000 (maybe more) in all his years and only lost I think it was like 5 people in all those years. Now the 1 in 300 is actually acurate but (your) Dr.G was referring to nationwide statistics. There have been a lot of general doctors who are not specialized in bariatrics trying to do the surgery and not having good success.
Kim Kim Kim, You are so normal it scares me!!!! Hee hee hee U know I love ya! You have the answer already and I honestly think you are starting to over analyze and worry yourself crazy. :) I did the same thing and I think that ALOT of us do! That is what makes us human/ Listen to these words, LET GO AND LET GOD! You are safest in the hands of The Lord! I honestly believe that when our time comes wether we are at home, in our car, on a plane or even the operating table if it is our time to go we will go regardless where we are. There is only one person who has the ultimate say in our time. Yes i do believe that we choose our destiny in the actions and the paths we take in life and as long as we live for the right reasons we are protected by the Hands of our Savior! You are a good person and you are going to be fine!!!! Just pray and give your worries over to God and let him be your protector! You already have all of us keeping you in prayer as well!!!!
I also want to add that I have always been anemic, its a part of life and I still am. So I take an iron pill everyday. Before surgery I too was borderline diabetic, was taking medicine for my heart, high BP, etc... Since my surgery I am OFF all those meds and there was a total of 11 a day I took. Now I just take yes my pain med for my back and Vitamins and thats it! Hang in there you are making a good decision, when its over with you will feel better and will be so much healthier and be very glad you did it!
You have my number call anytime you need to.
Hugs

Cindy!
I really feel ok now that I have read everyones reply. I just had a brief moment where I thought of doing the lap band. I don't think there is anything wrong with it but after thinking about it I really feel like the RNY is the best option for me! I agree with Let Go and Let God!
I couldn't ask for better support then I get here. I have had a couple of freak out moments but this was just a questionable moment. I have done my research and I do know. I could give anyone else advice on this but this was different...It was me. I had decided before going in my dr.'s office and I have made my final decision Regis!
Thanks so much!

Kim,
Dr. Gornichec is my doctor as well. I think he is very thorough and a great surgeon. Please don't be discouraged because he asked you to validate yorr desired surgery with information. He just wants to make sure you make an informed decision. There are issues and successes with each surgery. Please go to the lap band forum for more info on that procedure and success rates. Personally if I had an elevated blood sugar, it would probably be RNY for me. At the seminar I went to with Dr. Gornichec he said that the weight loss rate with Lap Band and RNY matched at 2 years not 10. Also I had a low iron level as well. Mine was 12. If I had to drive a long distance I would also be more likely to choose RNY. My mother in law had RNY 2 years ago and she had great loss, but has started gaining and has gained 25 lbs in the last year but I will say that it completely cured her diabetes which is reason enough to have it done considering the side effects of diabetes. Now I'M rambling SORRY.

Lisa,
No, I'm not discouraged at all with Dr. Gornichec. I think he is a capable very qualified surgeon. Its not him I was discouraged with. His opinion is different the Dr. Gorospe's but thats all that was different. I am confident in my decision for a surgeon! I think I just had thoughts for a bit of doing the lapband. I just wanted some banders opinions. and how they got there. I RAMBLED in my post! I appreciate your opinion! Thanks very much!
I hope you are doing ok???

Kim,
I am going to say this in my most blunt form.
His stats are off according to the info I have the national stats is 2 out of 200 have complications or death from RNY. Now that basically means this if you had WLS and die the next day the WLS is the cause. NOT true but since the person had WLS it is put on the stats for such.
The gold standard for WLS is RNY. The lap band is one of those WLS that have their own complications that have even caused death. But the manufacturers of the bands do not like that part being published...
As the queen the guru of complications I researched WLS and even sent emails to the surgeon general. So this is how I came to my decision. What is the best for me? Could I deal with a foreign object in my body having to pay for fills and then pay to be unfilled? How much weight do i have to lose and would the cost meet my needs... I had over a hundred questions that i asked myself.
Just a little info before surgery 478 pounds on 2 blood pressure meds one diabteic med looking at insulin and high cholestral plus on a 14 cpap machine I was tired 90 percent of the time did not want to go out and do anything ....
My decision was simple...lap band..noppers was not going to pay for a foreigh object to help me then have to pay 200.00 a pop for fills and just hope that it would work..plus i read how I could cheat the band I also did not have 3 years to get to my goal..for me 3 years was 3 years that I would still be suffering.
Here i am a year later I have lost 242 pounds I have had 9 surgeries including my RNY I am not taking any blood pressure meds or meds for anything else and my cpap was donated to the VA.I walk even when I could drive, my life has changed dramatically. And as a friend told me i am so dang fiesty, self confident now that they can not believe I was ever so big. I was alwasy blunt now more so and I show my attitude more than ever before.
Sweetie when I finally made my decision for RNY I found peace...I was never nervous, scared, or worried. Up to the last two surgeries..then I was just nervous cause of the tummy tuck.
I bless God for giving me this new gift of life and I thank GOD for the surgeons who helped me be where i am at.
To me I would have to consider not about the surgery but about my surgeon. I picked an ole school general surgeon who learned barartic surgery and taught it...who is board certified and has the honor of a center of excellance....
So ask yourself this is the surgery that has you bothered or the surgeon....
And as for your business...I did interior decorating for over 6 years. after surgery i was out of work for over two months. I did not lose customers, instead i realized it was not worth the headache and trouble. For me alot changed after surgery..my whole life changed. Instead of being the one that would never say no I went saying NO alot. Kim, just remember this little thing....Your business is a courtesy to those who chose to work. IT IS NOT YOUR LIFE to be there 24/7 for them If they dont like the fact that you are going to be out of comission for awhile tell them to kiss your rosy cheeks..and let them chose which cheek to kiss. This is your life not theres....and as I have said in the past..if having children complicate your life...birth control is available at any 7/11 or drug store...
Hugs and kissses to ya..and if ya want one on the cheek just pick the one..lmfao

being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it
Pattye, my ever so blunt, ever so sweet friend! I appreciate your advice and I totally agree with everything you said! Right down the the b/c at 7-11! That was good! I'll have to remember that and give that advice!
I'm confindent in my decision! I just questioned it for a moment! I had a moment where I entertained the idea of lap band. But I feel that I would not be as sucessful with it as the RNY. I think it is a personal decsion. I've read and researched and listened and I know what I need to do! What I WANT to do now!
Thanks for your input!

Kim, I feel that the surgery one chooses has to be ones own personal decision after doing much research. Does Dr. G do the sleeve? I have never heard that having the sleeve causes Gerd or acid reflux. That doesn't mean that it doesn't, I just have not run across that in my 3 years at the Bariatric Hospital. Please do your research on this. Don't feel that the RNY or band is your only option just yet. I personally don't think that the band is a good choice due to the fact that it is high maintence and you don't get as much restriction from it. Once you have the band you don't always have the band. It can be removed. You do have the risk of the band slipping or eroding into your stomach. Each surgery has its risk, therefor you want to choose the one that best suits your needs. Each surgery is also just a tool. You can gain weight back from each and everyone of them. It's how you choose to use your tool that makes you successful. I have seen minor complications with each one of the surgery's at one time or another. Unfortunately one cannot predict who will have problems and who won't.That is all in God's plan and hands. I wish you the best of luck. Once again, do your research and carefully choose which one will meet you needs the best. If I can answer any questions for you, please do not hesitate to ask. (((((HUGS))))) I know you will make the right choice. Let go, and let God!!! Rita
